Splinterlands: Making the most of magic monsters in Back to the Basics with Obsidian

Splinterlands is a complex game and it allows for various different cards and strategies. Each fight is different as there are various different rulesets applied and this can give specific cards an advantage depending on how you use them. In this post, I talk about a great battle that I won because of Grandmaster Rathe.

Obsidian is an earth summoner that costs 4 mana. This summoner gives +1 magic. I have this summoner at level 5 and my gold foil version is only level 2. It's a great summoner due to the increased magic damage even if I don't use it as often. I do think that it can be quite useful depending on the situation and magic damage goes through armor so it can help win fights.

Rule set, Battle and Plan

The ruleset this time is Back to the Basics, What doesn't kill you, and Taking sides. This means that monsters lose all abilities, all monsters gain the enrage ability, and no neutral monsters can be used. There is also 33 mana and I can choose water, earth, life, or death splinter.

Goblin Psychic64th
Madcap Magus45th
Hunter Jarx66th
Total Mana:34

My tank is Pelacor Mercenary as my tank soaks up some damage and deals some damage as well. After that is my array of magic monsters. None of the abilities work in this fight so I used all the gold foil magic cards that I had. I only had 4 so I put a ranged monster in the last spot as this was in a brawl fight.

Round 1

round 1.png
At first glance, I think I have the advantage. My opponent also decided to focus on magic damage but I have one more magic monster than my opponent and my magic damage is also buffed by my summoner.

Round 2

round 2.png
My opponent lost 2 monsters but I didn't lose any. However, my tank is almost dead. I think that I still have the advantage but anything could happen.

Round 4

image.png
I took out the strongest magic monster my opponent had and I still have most of my monsters up. So I have this match. I don't see how I can lose with all my magic monsters remaining.

conclusion.png
I was able to win the match a few rounds later just as I expected.

Conclusion

The battle this time played out as expected. Using magic monsters proved to be the right choice and Obsidian was the best summoner under this situation. I didn't have a 5th magic monster but it looks like I was able to win without it. My opponent didn't have many monsters with armor so I could have gotten away with more ranged monsters to deal more damage, but playing magic was the safer choice.

You can see my entire match here.

What did you think of my match? Was there anything you would have done differently? I think it is quite interesting to see how different players use the same card.

I know a lot of people actually hate Back to Basic but personally, I do enjoy it a lot. It removes a lot of the RNG and makes it simple math how to get the most out of your mana.
Thanks for sharing!

I agree. It removes a lot of RNG and simplifies things. You can just focus on the stats that a summoner or monster has instead.

The obsidian summoner seems like a good investment as it helped you do quite well in your battles and also earn cool rewards in the process. You are doing well in SPS. Thanks for sharing.

It's a good summoner but I don't use it as often. It does have its uses as magic monsters can be quite overpowered.
