Circumstances are what they are and...
The ones that touched us as living beings, we "wear and tear" at it.
We do not decide to be born, nor from which parents, nor at what time and place and almost everything that happens, does not depend on us and very little, is what we really decide.
Our YES and No = DESTINY, one part is conscious and another part is the product of habits and customs and our education and how other people influence us.
Almost our entire personal world is subject to beliefs and propaganda. Not to think, just to believe and to our absolute subjectivity.
The Socratic "knowing yourself" and the "becoming what you are" is a sophist trap, since both questions or demands are only possible to try to answer a posteriori, after a life already lived, that is, in old age, when real life is reduced to an increasingly shorter term and lucidity is one of the things that are lost with senility.
Distinguishing old age from senility is very important, the former does not take you out of life, the latter is a living-dying.
Returning to the SELF, it is not immutable, although character and personality tend to be identifiable from childhood, just as genetics preconditions us and circumstances require us to understand them in order to "deal" with them as best as possible to preserve our legitimate interests, values and principles and, as far as possible, those of our community.
Avoiding exaggerated selfishness, narcissistic type and conservatism that seeks to avoid, evade or prevent, the changes that society itself demands and needs and human reason provides through knowledge and techno-science and the necessary humanism that today we basically call human rights, which includes that of personal dignity, freedom and all discrimination and inequality that divides us.
We are concrete beings who are always looking for something, be it psychic, material and spiritual.
But almost always we remain dissatisfied, we are inevitably of the race of Prometheus and Faust.
Perhaps this is when a philosophy, religious belief, a spiritual impulse, an intimate, secret, personal relationship with mystery and silence, which some call God allows us to understand who I am and why I came into the world, from circumstances, common to many, but personalized in each one, because after all our relationship with the world and the concrete people we met, is what ended up defining us.
I read Ortega y Gasset in full between my high school and university, many years later this is my existential response to a phrase "Me and my circumstances" that I have questioned myself with this phrase to this day, and I keep questioning myself.
Nice day for everyone...
