That One Crucial Advice || Ladies Of Hive Community Contest #171
2️⃣ What would you like to say to young women today, what advice would you give them?
This week's LOH question by @trucklife-family brings to the fore something that many of us struggle with. I do too, sometimes.
Whatever advice we may give ourselves, they can be packaged into this one salient advice that we do not hear enough. I think there are very few women who have conquered the opposite of this feeling, risen above it to become a better version of themselves.
Right from when we are born, we're conditioned to believe the worst and see negative things about ourselves. Even when we are fortunate to be born into loving homes where our parents nurture us to see the best in ourselves, once we get out there—starting from school—the world changes that positive perception.
Many parents bid their cheerful children goodbye as they attend school and later stand outside their door to welcome home sad and heartbroken children. The world does that. They take every opportunity to change us into what we are not.
They tell us we're not perfect. We're slow and sloppy. We're annoying and most damaging of all, we're not beautiful! Nothing can break a person's spirit and esteem more than telling them they are not beautiful and accepted. From this ugliness comes bullying, stigmatic shaming (of all kinds) and assaults.
The world capitalises on this negativity to make money and enrich the pocket of a few with the production of cosmetics to alter our appearances and procedures to change our looks. All these efforts (money and time) are utilised to ‘buy’ acceptance and self esteem. But it never works. These things may fix our outside but our inside remains the most important part of us.
I could go on and on about ways in which we hurt each other because we are uniquely different and never exhaust this topic. But if there's one advice I would give to every woman, young and old, it would be — LOVE YOURSELF.
I struggle like everyone else when people question my self-worth and try to make me feel conflicted. Then I had the epiphany many years (thankfully) that I cannot be like the girl or lady standing next to me. Neither can this person be me. I am unique and so is she.
No doubt, we are different. Where's the fun in everyone looking, feeling, walking and talking the same? We would be like robots or automated beings and sincerely, I think the world would be boring.
That's where the beauty is—being different from the next person and uniquely so. Once we start to appreciate everyone's differences and accept them, the popular phrase “the world would be a better place” would not be a cliché. It would be a true reflection of our reality.
Women have lived the ‘lie’ from time immemorial that we are not good or beautiful enough and must go the extra mile, make almost-impossible sacrifices, to be accepted. This transforms our choices in life (especially in relationships), the way we relate with each other and changes our mindsets.
We make many mistakes (and are still making them) because we struggle to love ourselves. Slowly, we are regaining this part of ourselves back again. Bruno Mars in his song—Just the Way You Are—says:
She's so beautiful and I tell her everyday…
When I compliment her, she won't believe me
This song hits the nail on the head and coincidentally, it's a love song. Many times I get compliments and quickly shut them down. I didn't want to believe they were true until I was advised by elderly and mature women dear to me to happily accept them, whether or not they were given genuinely, because they are true.
Love and truth go together. When we begin to love ourselves, our eyes open to the truth that:
We are beautiful,
We are worthy,
We are strong,
We are confident, and,
We deserve the best that life has to offer.
I've learned never to believe the negative things I hear about me or around me. Once it comes, I shut it down and affirm the positive because that is the truth. The negative remains the lies spoken to take away every shred of good you've been blessed with. Once we believe the lies, we lose these parts of us and are changed into a different version. Then we struggle endlessly with this different version because it is not us.
The moment we begin to love ourselves and see our self-worth, our choices will change and so will our world. We'll accept ourselves, embrace the positives and living will be seamless, without stress.
I believe this song by Whitney Houston titled Greatest Love of All is apt for this topic. I love the lines,
Learning to love yourself
It is the greatest love of all
Only when we truly love ourselves can we love each other.

How can we love others, if we don't love ourselves? This is a great write up. I was thinking, as I finished, that one of our responsibilities as women is to be less judgemental of other women.
I went to an all-girls high school. I didn't realize until I graduated and went into a mixed gender environment how much appearance mattered--not true appearance, but appearance as reflected in the eyes of a man. My world turned upside down. Things like breast size never occurred to me as something that mattered. All of a sudden, this became one of the metrics for establishing value. Weight, even small variations in weight, assumed enormous importance. The worst part was that woman incorporated these value judgements in their world view and imposed them on other women.
I think the movie Barbie really has something to say on that score. I was not inclined to watch it and then one day when I was channel surfing, I caught it. How very refreshing.
I enjoyed this blog very much. It was a cause for reflection, and that is always a good thing.
Your experience of graduating from an all-girls school to a mixed gender society says it all. This reveals how our appearances are valued and judged to negatively impact our sense of self-worth. Our perception of beauty and worth are influenced by standards set up by the male gender. So we become different and inevitably forced to conform because we do not truly know ourselves and our worth.
The connection between self love and loving others came to me many years after some deep reflection fueled by the a toxic environment. I realise our environment are often a reflection of ourselves.
I've not see the movie Barbie but have heard it offers a refreshing perspective as you've noted. Thanks so much for your insightful thoughts on this topic. Always a pleasure to read your comments. 😊 Have a great day! !PIMP 💕

Indeed self love is very important and so is learning to accept our differences. Without them, we'll accept and imbibe lies from any corners. Thanks so much for your visit. !LADY 🙂

Marketers and Advertisers are very good at manipulating our smallest insecurities to foster an unmet need where they can offer us to buy their product as a solution to that need. It's why I don't have magazine, newspaper, or cable subscriptions. I rarely even shop at a Mall.
That's a good call, in my opinion. I sometimes browse these magazines simply to admire the pictures! 😄 Thanks so much for your visit. !LADY

Institutions play a big role in shaping up children and they need to imbibe these strong beliefs that both genders are equal and there is no one that is superior or inferior
Well said! I think in recent times more people are beginning to see the errors of the past and advocating that both genders are equal. Thanks so much for your visit. !LADY 🙂

They got it wrong in the past when it comes to gender discrimination, and thank God the narrative has changed drastically.
