I grew up in a family of 5 members, my parents, my 2 sisters and me and a dog, so I was always accompanied especially if it was to travel on vacation or an emergency trip. Most of the trips were as a family and even the dog accompanied us since he was a member of this family. For this reason a trip alone was unthinkable for me.

In 2016, my boyfriend had traveled to his native country, Cuba, and invited me to the island on vacation and proposed to me, meaning that we would get married in his country, so I had to make a series of personal documents that are expensive and the money he left me for expenses was not enough and I could no longer buy the ticket to Cuba. The solution was that a neighbor of his in Cuba was coming to Venezuela for work and with her he sent me an envelope with the money for the plane ticket.

The problem was that the woman was coming to Margarita Island and I live in the state of Táchira. Since I did not have enough money to pick up the package she had sent me, I had to travel alone. I bought my plane ticket, it was the first time I boarded a plane and I was very nervous. That morning with my mother's blessing I started my trip and overcame all my fears of traveling and walking alone.

Crecí en una familia de 5 miembros, mis padres, mis 2 hermanas y yo y un perro, por lo que siempre estaba acompañada sobre todo si era para viajar de vacaciones o algún viaje de emergencia. En su mayoría los viajes eran en familia y hasta el perro nos acompañaba ya que era un miembro más de esta familia. Por este motivo un viaje sola era impensable para mi.

El el año 2016, mi novio había viajado a su país natal, Cuba, y me invito a la isla de vacaciones y me propuso matrimonio,es decir que nos casariamos en su país, por lo que tuve que hacer una serie de documentos personales que son costosos y no fue suficiente el dinero que él me dejó para los gastos y ya no podía comprar el pasaje a Cuba. La solución fue que una vecina de él en Cuba venía a Venezuela por trabajo y con ella me envió un sobre con el dinero del boleto de avión.

El problema fue que la mujer venía a la isla de Margarita y yo vivo en el estado Táchira. Al no tener suficiente dinero para ir a buscar el paquete que me había enviado me tocó viajar sola. Compré mi voleto de avión, fue la primera vez que subí a un avión y estaba muy nerviosa. Esa mañana con la bendición de mi madre emprendí viaje y superé todos mis miedos de viajar y andar sola.

Once that plane took off I left all my fears behind, and started to enjoy the trip. I arrived in Porlamar and took a cab that took me to my destination and I was able to pick up the package successfully. But my adventure did not end there, it turns out that the only flight of the day that left for the state of Táchira was in the morning and it took me a couple of hours to get the package I was supposed to pick up, so I could not return by plane that day. I went to the port to return to the mainland on a Ferry, I bought the ticket but not for that day, I had to spend the night in that city since the only ferry was leaving in the morning. The city was a bit desolate and neglected, I had to ask some policemen to help me to find lodging, they kindly took me to an inn that, personally, I didn't like very much but the policemen let me know that it was the only place in the whole city that offered lodging. So I spent the night there.

Una vez que ese avión despegó deje todos mis miedos atrás, y comencé a disfrutar del viaje. Llegué a Porlamar y tomé un taxi que me llevó a mi destino y pude recoger el paquete con éxito. Pero mi aventura no terminó ahí, resulta que el único vuelo del día que salía para el estado Táchira era en la mañana y demoré un par de horas en conseguir el paquete que debía recoger, así que en avión no pude regresar ese día. Me fui al puerto para regresar a tierra firme en un Ferry, compré el boleto pero no para ese día, debía pasar la noche en esa ciudad ya que el único ferry salía por la mañana. La ciudad estaba un poco desolada y descuidada, tuve que pedir ayuda a unos policías para que me eijeran donde encontrsr hospedaje, amablemente me llevaron a una posada que, en lonpersonal, no me agradó mucho pero los policías me hicieron saber que era el único lugar en toda la ciudad que ofrecía hospedaje. Así que pasé la noche allí.

That afternoon I went to tour the port, walk around and get to know the city. The next day my adventure continued. Not only did I travel for the first time by plane on that occasion, now I would also travel for the first time by boat and I was very excited. I arrived at Puerto la Cruz and the first thing I did was to enjoy the beach.

Esa tarde me fui a recorrer el puerto, a caminar y conocer la ciudad. Al día siguiente mi aventura siguió. No solamente viajé por primera vez en avión en esa ocasión, ahora también viajaría por primera vez en barco y eso me tenía muy emocionada. Llegué Puerto la cruz y lo peimero que hice fue disfrutar de la playa.

I finished my journey from Puerto la Cruz to Táchira state by bus. It was a very nice experience that made me feel free, capable and gave me the opportunity to learn to enjoy life individually. This would be the first of many trips alone.

Terminé mi recorrido desde Puerto la Cruz hasta el estado Táchira en autobús. Fue una muy bonita experiencia que me hizo sentir libre, capaz y me dio la oportunidad de aprender a disfrutar de la vida de forma individual. Este sería el primero de muchos viajes sola.

After that I traveled to Cuba, by plane to another country, crossing the Caribbean Sea to meet my now husband. I returned to Venezuela alone a few months later and again I traveled to Cuba alone. This time I returned to my country with my baby, I felt nervous as if it was my first time traveling, but it went very well and we were able to enjoy our first trip alone.

Whenever I travel alone I feel a little fear that someone may come to take advantage of me, but I am alert to anything suspicious, I have my phone with emergency numbers and those of my family in case I need help, I tell someone where I'm going and how long it will take so that they are aware of me. I do not talk to strangers or tell them that I am alone. Those are my recommendations in case you have to travel without company.

Luego de esto viajé a Cuba, en avión a otro país, atravesando el mar Caribe para reunirme con el que ahora es mi esposo. Regresé a Venezuela sola algunos meses después y nuevamente viajé a Cuba sola. Esta vez regresé a mi país en compañía de mi bebé, me sentí nerviosa como si fuera la primera vez que viajaba, pero nos fue muy bien y pudimos disfrutar de nuestro primer viaje solas.

Siempre que viajo sola siento un poco de temor de que alguien pueda venir a aprovecharse de mi, pero estoy atenta a cualquier cosa sospechosa, tengo cerca mi teléfono con los números de emergencia y los de mi familia en caso de necesitar ayuda, le indico a alguien a que lugares voy y cuanto tiempo más o menose tardaré para que estén pendientes de mi. No ha lo con extraños ni les cuento que estoy sola. Esas son mis recomendaciones en caso de que tengas que viajar sin compañía.
