The Junk Food Diet

(Edited)

I'm beginning to think that there is something VERY wrong with the food in the USA. I've been in Jordan for just under two months, eating whatever I want, and I'm losing weight.

One might make the case that tourism or an increase in activity is behind this... Not even close. I'm lazy my friends, very very lazy. I've gone to see one sight in Amman, Jordan. I walk for maybe 2 hours a week, to go get food mostly. Sure, some stores are uphill, I lose a breath or two... but that isn't it, I promise you.

Naw dawg, it's the food for sure.

Just look at this salad, piled high with deep fried pita bread. Sure, its mostly vegetables, but what makes it healthier is what is NOT in it.

There's no added nonsense in the bread. Likely it was made fresh somewhere nearby, that's the way it is around here.

In fact, good luck finding anything that was not made somewhere nearby that isn't 2-3x its value. An added bonus to being a thrifty grocery shopper here is you will end up not only buying local, but the food you bring home is almost guaranteed to be better for you.

Even when getting takeout, the ingredients are just better. This particular salad is called fattoush, and I'm beyond addicted to it. It has a homemade lemon-sumac-pomegranate dressing, and it's like getting punched in the mouth by god.

"Well that's it!" You may say. "You're eating salad all the time, fried pita or not, that's healthy!"

aggressive buzzer noises WRONG!

You know what I eat with this salad usually? Red meat. More bread. Half a liter of Pepsi.

OH! And don't get me started on the freaking Pepsi! No high fructose corn syrup? Real sugar? An entire 1.5 liter bottle is 189 calories, compared to 155 calories in a 12oz bottle from the USA! In case you were wondering (I was), there are 50.72 ounces in 1.5 liters! What?!

I didn't even consume soft drinks when I was still in the US due to their syrupy taste. Some sexy but very bad influence here got me to try the Pepsi, and now I'm a fiend for the stuff! Yeah, Yaz makes fun of me for it, but I can't help but to drink so damn much of it when we get a bottle. 😩

I've eaten plenty of really not healthy stuff in general. Just look at this!

Apparently it's normal when getting a shawarma sandwich for it to be filled with what psychos here like to refer to as mayonnaise. It's eggs and garlic, fine in moderation. But NO, they smear it all up in your bread like it's the main focus.

Then the damn thing is grilled and cut up into little pieces. I must be honest, I don't like the shawarma I've had in the Middle East at all, which is pretty funny considering...

The falafel is much more my speed, and that I've eaten MANY times here. And what's in that? FRIED chickpeas! If I even look at fried food in the states I have to go walk 5 miles to burn it off, what is going on?

Since you can snag a falafel sandwich for .50 Jordanian Dinars here (roughly .75 USD), I've eaten them dozens of times when cooking sounded super lame. Other times we've ordered out from the butcher shop around the corner. They have a varied menu, and the meat is FRESH.

$1

Considering that hummus is legit FULL of olive oil, and red meat is supposed to be bad for you (especially when eaten with tons of bread), I'd say this is not healthy either.

Could it be that the preservatives, highly processed sugars, and odd dyes are what makes the USA have the highest rate of obesity? Yes, I think so. I've been reading labels here, and I've noticed a startling ingredient discrepancy.

Even pre-packaged foods and straight junk food have more forgiving labels than in the USA. Less calories, fewer ingredients, and usually no dyes.

I was shocked to see that the red/green dyes that crunchy people are always claiming make kids act out are actually labeled as such here. No kidding, it says it on the back of the package that it may have an adverse effect on the activity and attention span of children!
$1

Even the juice here is wild to me.

You know what's in it? Juice, water, and sugar. That's it.

I'm so used to "all natural" meaning that the preservatives are some kind of plant based gunk.
Or it means that yes, it is the juice you intend to buy, but also 70% apple juice from concentrate. Not here my friends, nope.

I couldn't make this any more natural unless I bought a pomegranate and juiced the damn thing myself sans sugar!

How is it that I'm dropping pounds eating cookies several times a week with my coffee, cooking with butter and heavy cream, and eating things like these cheese filled fatayer?!

It felt like magic, until I looked closer at the processes and ingredients that make Jordanian foods the way that they are.

Watching my clothes get baggier, I realize that less is more also applies to food. Who would think that the way things are processed could have such a tremendous effect? Those X health junkies are on to something major.
When I observe all of these details and differences, I see now why dieting in the USA was so frustrating. Why even working out daily and eating mostly veggies wasn't giving me the results I wanted. The processed salad dressings, canned goods, and any bread I ate were likely reversing the good choices I made.

Now I know, the obesity problem in the USA is not just some cultural tendency to eat too much. There is a lot wrong with the food being eaten, and perhaps it's time America addresses that.

Yeah US diet and food is complete trash. I mean, if the super market has a section labeled "health food", what the fuck is the rest of the food in the store!?

Glad to hear it's not like that in other parts of the world.

Bon Appatite ya !PIMP

Dude, right?! I never thought about the health food section that way, but now that you say it... The heck?!

It's cool that there aren't specific labels for real food or organic food here for sure! I'm loving just cooking whatever I'm inspired to make for me and the hubs, yesterday it was buffalo wraps with HEAVY CREAM bahahaha

Yes! 100% this. While situation in Europe isn't as bad yet, it's definitely getting there the more we gentrify and adopt all the crap fast food chains and brands over here. Just cooking yourself (or at least eating something that was made fresh without being frozen, preservative-heavy, etc.) is a huge game-changer for your health. I'm glad you're finding the diet there is agreeing with you! Westernized cultures have a very fucked-up idea about a healthy diet (i.e. lots of working out and veggies, exactly what you said). Not it at all. Fruit and veggie are great, but not nearly the super-trick we tend to think they are. Like there's a small handful of truly good stuff like avocado, but honestly, a carrot won't do such a big difference. The traditional 5 a day don't really get you anywhere near to a healthy diet either. Fresh, organic ingredients, ditching ultra-processed foods and eating some of the really healthy stuff (like avos, berries, etc.) means a more balanced, more indulgent diet and better health.

PS: red meat and olive oil are actually quite backed by studies for having loads of benefits for your brain health (and general health, really). :D

So again, glad this diet shift is working out for you! It's sometimes tricky adapting to a different diet :D Hugs.

Yes!! We place so much emphasis on things like calorie deficit and cutting foods, when maybe what should be focused on is just cutting random nothing ingredients. As you said, GOOD fats shouldn't be shunned, the nonsense we use to process foods is far more harmful than a cut of lamb or an avocado could ever be!

It's been wild to realize that so many things I've been told are TERRIBLE for me actually have huge benefits. Even my MS symptoms are lessened here, something I've spent endless time trying to achieve in the USA!

Thank you for the added perspective on red meats and oils, as well as the general propaganda surrounding food. Little by little my ideas are changing on all this, and in the most delicious ways! haha Hugs and coffee your way 🤗

The more I hear about food in the US, the more I understand why there's an issue with health there. Give me Turkish food anyway! Fats and oils are good for you - your body needs them. It also needs a varied diet! Yum.

Seriously, the USA is a mess 😂

Fats and oils are good for you - your body needs them

Don't have to tell me twice 😌 I'm loving that I can reframe the way I feel about food now! It was way hard to feel that my health was tied to eating a small variety of food before... Yes to FREEDOM!!!

You're not the only one to notice how bad American food is, and I have heard lots of stories like yours of eating recklessly and losing weight abroad. Between preservatives, dyes, artificial flavors, and chemicals throughout the agricultural industry, there is no shortage of potential culprits to blame or investigate. Blame is easiest, of course.

You said it, blame is much easier than getting to the bottom of it. At least we can share experiences that way and hopefully usher in a new way of thinking about food!

This whole experience with food abroad is almost like healing some kinda trauma inflicted by the weird misinformation 😩! I'm loving it!

Oh for sure. We noticed the same thing when we were in Italy. It’s a chemical stew of garbage here in the US in terms of the food. A lot of it has to do with the crazy amounts of pesticides and chemicals sprayed on the food every single day in all kinds of crazy areas and even ones we wouldn’t expect. It’s no wonder why rich people invest in both chemical companies and food companies. They win on both ends the sick fucks.

I hope we can wrest control back because this is heading to the danger zone very quickly and I don’t know how we can recover in some ways.

And don't forget big pharma when all else fails! 😤

Sheesh, it's wild to me how much my body has benefited from the simple act of eating non-stepped on foods! I have health issues that I've looked everywhere for an answer to, now they are improved... only difference? Location and real food. Magic.

I hope we can take back control of it all too, my heart hurts for all the kids growing up with this as "normal"!

Yeah we are going through a number of issues ourselves related to this stuff, it sucks! My wife has a bunch of food related issues that we are getting better on, but the garbage in the food doesn't help!

One of the other critical parts to this whole piece too - I'm wondering if you are getting more direct sunlight exposure where you are now compared to when you were here in the US? I've been listening to some brilliant people talk about how important that is for our health. Jack Kruse is really on this topic, although he can be a little brutal to listen to but his information is really powerful.

Gosh yes, my son was born with a milk sensitivity and that was my intro into how much sneaky stuff goes into our food! It was maddening to me that I could not even eat most breads or canned goods because somehow they had milk in them (I was nursing)!

And you might be on to something with the sunlight there. I'm from Ohio and it's cloudy half the time, lots of rainy days and diluted rays. I'll have to look up Jack Kruse, I've certainly been noticing that people from countries where walking and sitting outdoors is the norm are far healthier!

Everything looks delicious here😋, and I'm extremely PLEASED to hear that you're finally losing weight (not saying that you were fat😅). You might find yourself getting more active as time goes on... I'm antsy to get outdoors.
I can't speak about the food in the US because it's just secondhand info that I have, but you always seem to eat healthy enough. I think it has to do with being in a new environment, and you'd never know how happy I am to hear that you're doing well.
BTW, I didn't realise that this was a community itself... It's always good to know of these general communities:)))

Dammit Milly, I knew you thought I was fat! Ahahaha 😜

It's for sure awesome to be seeing the results I've hoped for at last- feels like I've been right on the edge of fitting into my pre-baby clothes for a freaking year! I know I was complaining to you about that before, turns out all I had to do was go to Jordan and eat junk LOL

The new environment and circumstances are definitely having a lot of great impacts on my mood and health 😌💕💃 FREAKING FINALLY!

Lots of love your way 🤗💗

That's one reason we started raising most of our on food. It had a MAJOR impact on my health when e started in 2008.

It's really cool that you're able to do that! Homesteading and in general connecting with the earth more are two things I hope to have more of in my future. The bit of time I've been able to spend on farms etc in my life have always stuck out as special, AND the food is just so much more delectable!
