What To Watch Tonight

Flow

The bittersweet and dialogue-free animation follows the adventures of an adorable black cat in a post-apocalyptic world inhabited by animals. It embarks on a journey of survival and unity in the face of adversity. Will it clinch the Oscar for Best Animated Feature, beating out Wild Robot and Inside Out 2? Possibly yes (though, for me, Wild Robot is the better film).

  • Despite having no dialogue (since the protagonists are animals), it doesn’t bother you at all.
  • The visuals are so mesmerizing and powerful that you don’t even miss the dialogue.
  • The eyes and gaze of the cat, the film’s main character, are so expressive that they convey her entire emotional state.
  • The interactions between the animals are beautifully depicted, as is the film’s overall message.
  • It wraps up in a very satisfying way.
  • It’s surprisingly emotional, something you might not expect at first glance.
  • The focus on the dynamics and survival of the animals also touches on how unity and cooperation can help us rediscover our humanity.
  • It appeals to both children and adults, as it leans heavily on exploration—something that captivates audiences of all ages.
  • The animation style might not sit well with everyone.
  • In a few spots, though it flows well overall, the pacing can feel a bit slow.

The Order

The Order is based on true events that took place in 1980s America. It tells the story of Bob Mathews, who, along with a group of domestic white neo-Nazis from communities in the Pacific Northwest, started a movement. Inspired by the six rules of a far-right book, they engaged in bank robberies, stockpiling weapons, bombings, murders of Jews and Latin American immigrants, and ultimately sought to spark a revolution. I believe it won’t get much attention from the mainstream audience in Greece, but it definitely deserves yours.

  • Jude Law delivers a strong performance in the leading role.
  • Nicolas Hoult also stands out with an impressive portrayal.
  • The central storyline, based on real events, is highly engaging.
  • Gritty and realistic, the film handles its subject matter as it should.
  • The ending is well-executed.
  • It builds suspense and tension, especially during the final act.
  • The editing is sharp and impactful.
  • It cleverly critiques societal issues, offering plenty of food for thought about modern-day phenomena.
  • It falls into some inevitable genre clichés.
  • Certain subplots feel forced and don’t always blend seamlessly.
  • While captivating, it doesn’t deliver that extra "wow" factor audiences might expect.
  • Some inconsistencies in character behavior make you wonder, “Why?”
