Cauliflower Au Gratin

avatar

Today I'm back with another recipe that is easy to make and not expensive either. It's not the first time I'm making this dish and you can guess why. Yes, that's right, because it's heavenly good and not complicated. I like simple dishes that don't require a lot of work and also have a few ingredients only. This is one of them, although it may seem differently.

Cauliflower Au Gratin (2).jpg

The original recipe is this one, but I adjusted it to my taste, adding to it and skipping a couple of ingredients.

Ingredients for 4 servings:

  • 1 big cauliflower,
  • 1 big onion,
  • 2 clove garlic,
  • 500g minced meat,
  • 150ml rice,
  • olive oil,
  • salt,
  • pepper,
  • 1tbs red paprika powder,
  • sour cream,
  • grated cheese,
  • butter,
  • breadcrumbs.

Method

The method is very simple, even though it has a few phases, that might make it look complicated. Don't let it scare you off thought :)

Cauliflower Au Gratin.jpg

Wash and cut the cauliflower into florets, cook in salty water.
Saute sauté the finely chopped onion in an appropriate quantity of olive oil, add chopped garlic at the end. Make sure you don't burn it as once burnt, the onion becomes bitter.
Cook the rice in 3 times more water, add some seasoning to the water as well, to add some extra flavor.

20221201_102854a.jpg

Add the minced meat to the sautéed onion, mix well, add salt, pepper and whatever seasoning you like. Stir till the meat becomes white, which takes up about 10 minutes. Some of the water will evaporate till then.

20221201_103652a.jpg

20221201_103823a.jpg

Add the rice and mix well.

This could be a dish on its own as already tastes good, but the final product tastes even better.

20221201_103437a.jpg

I like to use my fireproof tray for recipes like this, so here it is, buttered and sprinkled with breadcrumbs. This can be neglected even, but it comes in handy when extra moisture needs to be dried up and prevents the food sticking to the tray as well.

20221201_104157a.jpg

Place half of the cauliflower in the tray.

20221201_104456a.jpg

Cover with the meat-rice mix.

20221201_105136a.jpg

Finally add the rest of the cauliflower on top.

20221201_103853a.jpg

20221201_104041a.jpg

Add 1 tsp red paprika powder (top quality only, no brick powder please) to the sour cream and mix well. The paprika adds a nice flavor to it and makes the cauliflower brownish at the end.

20221201_105634a.jpg

Pour the mix on top of the cauliflower, spread it as much as possible.

In a preheated oven, cook for 30 minutes, at 150C.

20221201_113345a.jpg

This is how it looks like after 30 minutes.

20221201_113448a.jpg

Sprinkle with grated cheese and put the tray back to the oven for 10 minutes, at 150C and grill function, for the cheese to melt and become golden brown.

20221201_114950a.jpg

And voilà, the cauliflower au gratin is ready to be served! @incublus I said voilà 😂 please note!

20221201_115034a.jpg

20221201_115039a.jpg

As you can see, the cauliflower is golden brown and the cheese melted nicely.

20221201_120111a.jpg

20221201_120207a.jpg

20221201_120328a.jpg

@incublus, voilà, lunch is served!

So this is my recipe for today. Try it out as you won't regret it. If you're vegetarian, you can leave the meat out as it will still be delicious. Some recipes have eggs added. You can do that. Beat a few eggs, add salt and pour over the cauliflower.

Hmm, this does look yummy especially with the cheese on top of it. I'm not sure if I've heard of cauliflower before, lolz but I'm sure it's because we don't make use of it too much here, hehe.

I'd love to try out this dish but then I will have limitations, first my lazy self and second the ingredients, haha.

Thank you so much for sharing the recipe with us, I really appreciate it.

What ingredients you will not be able to find? Are you referring to cauliflower?

Yes I'm referring to that one in particular. I think I can get others here but will be a little expensive, hehehe.

Broccoli is similar, but I don't know if it is available. It's expensive here.

I will check for broccolis but I can't say I've really seen it but I guess it's because I don't make use of it too much.
Thank you so much for the information 😊

Voilà! It looks so delicious. I really like cauliflower but not garlic. Would it still taste great without garlic? I think so, I'll try that.

Thank you! Fussy incublus! You don't like ginger, garlic and God knows what else 😁 You can leave the garlic out as it it not so important.

I like the idea, it's new to me. Usually, I cauliflower without rice and meat, but I add mushrooms, greenery, and eggs, and yes, cheese. This recipe is more filling and is a complete dish. Maybe I'll try it! 😉 Thank you!

P. S. I'm baking cookies at the moment 😆

I'm glad you like it. Cauliflower has all kinds of combinations, you can use whatever you like with it, that's the huge advantage of it.

I'm also glad to hear you're baking cookies. That means some king of normality, to some extent, right? We want cookies 😂

Wow. So yummy. Hehehe.

Only if I could cook something like this. It would take me months to get the sauces and ingredients. Then another months again to get myself on how to cook it to perfection.

Nice and tasty…

Why would take you a month? For financial reasons? These are common things, I suppose you can get them on every corner.

OMG! This looks amazing 🤩 I just came back from the shop. While there I looked at the cauliflower and shook my head thinking I can not be bothered to cook and now I regret it, cause I really wanna try this dish! It goes on my shopping list for next weekend though!

Lol, what a story! 😂 Now you have to wait for one week to cook this, but better late then never. See? This is why it's good to check Hive at the grocery shop. 🤣

Ehh, I must be the most lazy cook ever. Usually my men cook for me, but since I have none at the moment, it’s a drama! I only cook at the weekends, cause week days are just too short. I cam back home and all I wanna do it sleep 😴

Yes, should have checked Hive while shopping! Wouldn’t be anything unusual, but today phone was tightly packed in the bag while I was strolling there with a big smile for no reason 😅

Lol, so you pick men based on their cooking skills 😂 Not a bad criteria by the way! And yes, next time you're shopping, don't forget to scroll through your feed, it may give you an idea about what to buy and what to cook. Saves you from the headache 😁

I learnt to make cauliflower au gratin at school, topped with white sauce and cheese. It's often served as a side dish in UK but basically I wasn't keen on the dish. Adding rice and meat is very interesting as is the paprika in sour cream instead of white sauce and makes a full meal out of it.

😲 What school did you go to? Cooking school?

This indeed is like a full meal, we don't serve anything with this as it has rice and meat too. White sauce is good too but I prefer sour cream.
