Celebrating Independence Day at Home with Family

avatar

August 14th is Pakistan's Independence Day, a very significant day. On this day, our country gained freedom after a long period of British rule, and many sacrifices were made for this independence. We usually remember the names of the founders, and there's no doubt that their hard work and courage played a significant role in our freedom. However, we should also pay tribute to those who sacrificed everything, including their lives, for this independence. It's a very painful story, but can we really say that we are truly free, even after 77 years of independence? I don't think so. We no longer have the courage and strength that the previous generations had. We can't even stand up for our rights in a free country. Anyway, this is a long topic, and it's not the right time to discuss it now. In this post, I want to share how I spent my 14th August 2024.

This day is important to me because it's a public holiday Hahaha, just kidding. The real reason is that it's important to teach our children the significance of this day with our family. Although my children are still very young, we should do something that helps them remember that this is Pakistan's day. My Father put up the Pakistani flag on our rooftop, and when I came home from the office on the 13th, my children excitedly told me, "Did you see the flag? Dada Abbu (Grandpa) put it up on the roof. We'll all go and see it tomorrow."

The day started a bit late because it was a holiday, so there was no rush to get up early. We had breakfast and then got ready. The children wore nice green and white clothes, put on green sunglasses, caps, and handbands. They were all set, and we had a photo session. We take these pictures because we also share them with my elder brother, who lives in Sweden. He gets really happy when he sees these pictures.

On holidays, we usually prepare something special to eat, but since today was a double celebration Independence Day and a holiday, my Mother made something extra special i.e. Chicken Shashlik with Chinese rice. It's one of my favorite dishes. It’s called Chinese, but it’s more of a Pakistani-Chinese dish. After watching some movies and news on TV, it was time to eat. The chicken shashlik was delicious, we really enjoyed the food.

After the meal, we had ice cream. This wasn’t just any ordinary ice cream or something bought from the market, it was a special ice cream that my Father made at home. I couldn’t believe it was homemade, it was so tasty. We all loved it. My Father often does such things, he's like Superman, always surprising us with unexpected treats. After enjoying the ice cream, we all took a rest and had a power nap before waking up in the evening.

In the evening, we went up to the rooftop for tea. The children were thrilled to see the flag, and we enjoyed tea with biscuits on the roof. I went up a bit higher, near the water tank, and captured the sky on Independence Day. The birds were flying in groups, it seemed like they were also celebrating the day of freedom. The weather was overcast, with clouds covering the sky, making it feel like it could rain at any moment, but it didn’t. We all had a great time together, took lots of pictures, including the kids saluting the flag, holding it, and posing in different ways. The reason for so many pictures was my new cellphone, but that's another story for another post.

After a while, we came back downstairs, and for dinner, there was a different plan. My Mother suggested ordering burgers and haleem online. I don’t know how I forgot to take pictures of the dinner, maybe because the online ordering process became quite hectic for me. Most of the restaurants had stopped deliveries, probably due to the rush at dine-in. The roads were also crowded, so it was really difficult to place the order, and the food took over an hour to arrive. By the time it came, we were so hungry that the idea of taking pictures didn’t even cross my mind. I thought about it after eating, but by then, it was too late. That's how we spent our 14th August, enjoying every moment. I’m really thankful to my family for making this day so beautiful and special. I had a great time.
