Bread Tales
Bread come in all shapes and sizes, white or brown, whichever takes your fancy, and has become a kind of a hobby with me ever since I started experimenting for my Hive blogs. Much of my inspiration comes from Granny Google, but I'm not very obedient as I don't stick to recipes, and so my imagination starts taking off.
My mother used to swear it was being left-handed that made me do things differently. She often used to shake her head, smile, and say I look so awkward with this left hand!
My favourite Wholewheat Bread, dusted with flour
Of course, I'm not one to strictly stick to recipes and often get the wildest ideas, but hubby doesn't mind, as he always gets to taste-test.
Crispy Breadsticks
Roosterkoek - literal translation BBQ Bread and a variation on the theme of - these are Roosterkoek breadsticks - cooked on the braai or BBQ as the rest of the world calls it!
A bread comedy
I never thought that bread baking would have me giggling like someone who'd lost all their marbles, till I innocently published my post Save the planet, Save pennies - Recycle, Upcycle, Repurpose and shared how one could bake bread in food cans. You can head on over there and see what @meesterboom saw, a very vivid imagination, but now has me giggling every time I look at the photo of my gorgeous little loaves!
I'm not even going to share that photo, you can see it in my recycling post and read the comments if you need a good laugh, something we all need to do more often in this crazy old world of ours, so thank you Mr Boom for that ;)
I will only share the tin bread pic while still in the pans, blush every time I look at the final product in that photo!
A cheese bread made with the extra dough; I'm not shy at showing that off!
Preparing the bread dough is vital to the success of your bread as it needs a good rise, so keep the following in mind:
- Always knead it with love
- Place in a warm place to rise
- Knock it down gently and place it into a well-oiled baking pan
- Leave it to rise again
- Turn the oven on to about 180 C
- When the dough has risen again, place the loaf into the hot oven. If the temperature is not right, your bake will flop
- Same thing can happen if you open the open door while baking and your bread will be rock-hard and not very good for making sandwiches.
- Enjoy the aroma of freshly baked bread, best eaten when hot and slathered with real butter; mouthwatering for sure!
I hope you will keep these simple steps in mind when baking your own bread next time ;)

I've already shared some of my bread journey here on Hive; I could not show you all, as I found way too many for just one post and you can blame that on @jaybird's Steemit Sandwich Contest, and later on Silver Fish's BISS sandwich contest, but will share a couple more.
Bread in a cup - a microwave bread
Bread art, something I really enjoyed.
Cheese Loaf
Honey & Oats Wholewheat Bread
One thing I still have not mastered is sourdough bread like Silver Flower makes, so guess what I always have to buy when we go anywhere near a good bakery ;)
These ones don't look pretty, but they sure taste good!
This was my mock sourdough bread, made by adding instant yeast to the sourdough starter, still did not have the right texture nor the taste of real sourdough bread.
I'll end off with a sugar & cinnamon Monkey Bread, called thus as one breaks pieces off and enjoy; best eaten while still hot!
And so my Bread Tales come to an end, hope you enjoyed it!

Cor blimey, you have some right fancy bread patterns. I have never done much beyond some basic scoring!
And not a single mention of the bread from the tin! ;O)
I saw your sourdough bread @meesterboom, am so jealous, it certainly looks like the real McCoy!
It was you baptizing my tin bread that got me thinking about the breadmaking process 🤣🙈
I'll never make bread again without having a chuckle 😅
I do like a bit of breadmaking, do it almost every second day. It used to be every day but everyone in my house was getting very demanding and starting to eat only bread.
Haha, glad of that. We all need a chuckle!
Ahem, Lizelle, you sure guaranteed to get a rise with those loaves! Seriously, one of the things I am learning about sourdough, is that there isn't just one recipe and flavour. I am not an expert but just with what I make, with two different recipes, the one doesn't taste - or have the same texture - as the other.
LOL my poor tin bread has been desecrated!
My starter is still alive, have not had time to try baking it again but I'm now trying a German method which requires no feeding, quite a dry mix that's then covered in flour.
I will share it, but only if it has a good rise😉🙈
I enjoyed this tremendously @lizelle!
I eagerly look forward to spending time more time to make bread.... this weekend!!!
I want to start experimenting with scoring patterns again, been so hectic here after the storms but I'll definitely be making a loaf of bread today, it's chilly & wet here, but nothing like the April storms!
Thank you for the visit😉
I am just getting into learning to make my own bread and it is a lot of fun. I bought a breadmaker on amazon a few days ago and have already made a few loaves. I am on my second loaf today because I forgot to add the salt to the one I made this morning and it did not taste good at all. One of these days i will get the hang of it and make some cool looking breads like what you have.
Breadmaking certainly is very rewarding and the variations are endless! I also forgot to add salt once, what a letdown! It's quite amazing what an important role this humble ingredient plays in bringing out the flavour of food.
I still use my breadmaker when I want to wake up to the smell of bread baking!
I hope we see your bread art here soon! The secret is a firm dough (can leave it in the fridge for a while if it's not) & just a fine dusting of flour (I used too much!)
I used thread to make a kind of a 'grid' & used a stanley knife for scoring the patterns.
Oh ... that is such a GOOD idea! I would have never thought to use thread. I do use a piece of extra fishing line to cut certain things, like cheese cake or buns.
The addition of a crate cutter is perfect!
The thread idea came from a YouTube video I saw. Fishing line sounds great for cheesecake, so I'll be scavenging in hubby's fishing gear, thank you for that @cosmictriage 👌
Oh good lord.
Now I'm just drooling. I shall hunt down your recipes and I do believe that The Big Guy is going to be happy about it too. He used to be quite the bread guy.
And those images. WOW!
You're too kind @cosmictriage, thank you!
I've not played in the kitchen for a long while, it's really chilly here today, the perfect day for that!
Have a great Wednesday 🤗
Oh my...you are a bread artist! How beautiful the loaves looked and I could almost smell the aroma wafting around me. I may have even drooled a little bit lol. I plan to practice in the fall and would love to try some of your ideas. Those bbq breadsticks are intriguing.
Glad you enjoyed it @tamaralovelace!
We use a firmish bread dough, has to be dusted with flour, really is delicious with the smoky flavour😋
Oh Lord, my mouth is watering! One of my favorite smells is freshly baked bread. My sourdough starter will be ready to mix into the dough tomorrow. I'm going to do a cold proof in the fridge in a proofing basket overnight and I should have bread (or something resembling it) on Thursday. : ) What a long process it was to build the starter.
I look forward to seeing your sourdough bread Eric! I watched that YouTube video of the no-feeding starter dough & am doing that now. Hoping to have a loaf by tomorrow.
Good luck with yours, enjoy your day xxx
My greetings @lizelle
Wonderful bread making you have shared with us. I am quite sure they taste as good as they look.
Reminded me of my wife when she did her bread cooking and had me as her taste - test. She always passed those tests with me, jajaja
I should say that I have enjoyed reading and eye-eating your bread post.
Take care...
Awe you must miss her @ogutierrez, but I'm glad this brought back good memories!
Take care of yourself too🤗
Wow ! These are certainly some lovely looking breads. I do so love bread.
I saw the shape of the canned breads when I read that fun post. It crossed my mind of what the loaves were shaped similar too, but I was not about to say that. I must have commented before meesterboom, because I did not see his comment. Leave it too him !
LOL, I never saw what they looked like until mr Boom pointed it out! Now it stares me in the face🙈 And when the comments started coming, I was in stitches as I then saw the likeness to breadmaking as well, hence this post😅
Good to have a chuckle not so😅
Hahaha. I don't doubt it, after your successful post for the BOM, 😂😂😂😂😅.
I've never been good at baking bread. At home, it's my husband who likes to make bread. And he has made several attempts to make it with sourdough, but it still doesn't come out very well.
All those bread look delicious, and I think now I need a midnight snack, hehe. I'm dying for a piece of that Monkey Bread right now.
LOL, I couldn't resist it after my poor tin bread made us laugh like that, or rather mr Boom who saw what I now see every time I look at it 🤣
I've got a mock sourdough bread in the oven...but not baked in a pan, not a food can😅
The monkey bread is really easy to make - it's a basic scone dough, cut up into smaller pieces, rolled in cinnamon sugar and loosely packed in a pan.
Enjoy your day Eli🤗
That Monkey Bread looks easy to make as you describe it, I might try it.
And when I saw that you had done a post about bread, I thought for sure you would omit any kind of bread baked in a food can. 🤣
