Scrapyard Discoveries, with a taste of communism

Greetings, urban explorers!

Recently my friends sold a small flat that wasn't used for about a decade and it finally found its new owner. They agreed with him that it will be swiped out before it changes its ownership.

So last Saturday I went to the gym, I mean I took a pair of construction worker gloves, I put on some old clothes and went to help them clean up all useless metallic items.

Time has put its stamp on the interior of the apartment and some of those signs were quite artistic:

However, that would not be the focus of my post today :)

Once we collected all metallic items and loaded them into a small truck we went to a local scrapyard where I was stunned by what I saw...

Just for your information, in case you are curious, currently the buy back prices of old home appliances and metallic items in general is between EUR 0.16 and 0.21 per kilo depending on their thinness. They are sold in bulk, of course.

The first item I saw that got me put out my camera out was this old landline phone used in the mines (lots of former closed charcoal mines around):

What impressed me the most were some info and warning signs. I will try to translate those to English for your entertainment :)))

"TO THE FAIR". Please note that in Bulgarian, "a fair" is also used for situations where something ridiculous is going on.

"PHOTO. Manufactures photos black and white and colorful, also develops films of amateurs"

DSC_0242.jpg

"FIRE HAZARD, KEEP OUT OF FIRE!"

DSC_0244.jpg

That doesn't need any translation, LOL, however its story would be amazing, I am sure. How did it get here, thousands of mile away from Vegas? :) Do you recognize the logo?

DSC_0245.jpg

"DIMITROVGRAD". A city plate, its size gives a hint this was placed at the railway station most probably.

DSC_0246.jpg

This one actually took my breath as it sounds quite dangerously!

"WARNING! Check if the line and rim circuit breaker is switched off, ground it and then enter into the dead cell."

Here I have to admit I have no idea what a "dead cell" is!

DSC_0247.jpg

"DO NOT SWITCH ON! It's been working on the line." (implying people are working on the wiring)

DSC_0248.jpg

"IRRIGATION" but it might be "WELDING" instead, I am not sure what irrigation equipment might need 20k Volts of voltage :)))
"Cell Number 9"

DSC_0250.jpg

"Ideal Home". In the communist past of Bulgaria, some homes that were meeting certain criteria were given those plates. Especially in the countryside and the villages.

The fun part here is that this was put on the cage of pigeons :)))

Here are few more interesting details that caught my eyes:

DSC_0243.jpg

The bronze busts of the two "greatest" communist leaders - Lenin and Georgi Dimitrov (his smaller Bulgarian "brother")

DSC_0252.jpg

This seemed to be a custom made stove for burning charcoal, with a military helmet on top. Artistic combo ;)

It seems all those chains and items were for sell.

Finally those fridge magnets caught my attention. The top four yellow-backgrounded "stamps" are famous Bulgarian historical figures.

Next, Mr. Putin, saying "I see you, you are not working!"

Next, a picture and a phrase by the last communist Bulgarian dictator, Todor Zhivkov: "What I have built for 45 years, you cannot paint it for the same time!"

The two repeating magnets with the portrait of the same character say in the form of a verse: "28 years without Goodman Tosho, day by day it get worse".

"Tosho" is a short name for Todor.

Well, some quality time spent in the scrapyard while we were waiting for the evaluation of our scrap, isn't it? :)))

Oh I love scrapyards! It's a good job I only have a small flat, else I would come back with loads of bizarre items. I have too much already!

I think we are all fond of the things we spend our money upon :) They keep our memories and those of our friends and relatives that are not among us anymore... I think I am a rational person yet I still can't send away some of the clothes of my father who passed away nine years ago.

Oh tell me about it. I'm very sentimental when it comes to certain items.
