Las Noches de Palas

El sol de Palas empezaba a ocultarse, dejando asomar destellos naranja, entre las nubes tornasol. En la colina, un fresco aroma a tierra recién lavada por la lluvia de la tarde llenaba todo el ambiente, mientras los pequeños charcos y la tierra suela le dificultaban ascender por la cuesta, Rebeca trataba de avanzar dando traspiés, entre saltos y largas zancadas.

Se había propuesto pasar su primera noche en Palas, en aquella pequeña colina que había logrado ver desde la cápsula, mientras descendía, si miraba atrás aun podía ver a algunos pocos kilómetros el puerto espacial al que arribara en la mañana, y en él que, en un pequeño almacén de campismo, comprara una tienda, un calentador y varias raciones de campamento, con la intención de iniciar ésta, su primera aventura.

Al puerto espacial lo separan treinta kilómetros de la ciudad más cercana, que podían ser recorridos en alguno de los de aerotaxis autónomos, generados en las afueras de la terminal, o en el más económico monorriel de levitación magnética, la mejor alternativa para los que quería ver la belleza del paisaje del Planeta, además de ahorrarse algunos créditos.

Pero para ella, eso debería esperar a mañana, había venido a Palas por la aventura y no perdería la oportunidad de empezar haciendo aquí su primera locura, dormir arropada por el desconocido cielo de este planeta, en esta colorida colina, parecida a una única arruga que se elevaba en medio de una colcha pulcramente tendida.

Al llegar a la cima, lo que le costó un poco, pues su calzado no era precisamente el mejor para caminar sobre fango, sacó de su mochila, un pequeño paquete de unos 20 por 20 centímetros en el que se encontraba comprimida una tienda desechable de polímero reflectante, que permitía mantener el calor interior, el cual obtendría de un pequeño calefactor eléctrico, que sólo le había costado un crédito, adquirió esto más por prevención, que por necesitarlo en realidad, pues Palas mantenía una agradable temperatura casi todo el año, aunque durante la temporada de lluvias, podía descender hasta casi los 273 grados durante las madrugadas, de sus noches de dieciocho horas, nada que pudiese ser realmente causa de hipotermia portando la ropa adecuada.

Ajustó la temperatura de su chaqueta dejándola que se mantuviera igual que la del ambiente, pues aún hacia frio, y se sentó en el interior de la tienda a contemplar a lo lejos como salía el bulbo galáctico por el horizonte de palas, mientras comía una insípida ración de pollo con fideos al curry, la cual no se había calentado bien, tal vez porque el reactivo que contenía el fondo del paquete de la ración y que servia para eso, debió estar caduco.

Cuando terminó de comer empezó el espectáculo que tanto había esperado y del que había escuchado incontables veces, en el cielo, infinidad de silenciosos relámpagos recorrían las capas más altas de la atmósfera, saltando de un lugar a otro como si de invisibles nubes se tratara, a la vez que una especie de velo luz de diferentes colores parecía ondear por toda la cúpula celeste, tras este espectáculo de colores se podía apreciar el increíble brillo de las estrellas, que en Palas era especialmente intenso para la delgadez de la atmosfera superior y la casi ausencia de nube, pues los vientos las desgarraban y dispersaban rápidamente.

Pero lo mejor aún no ocurría, tendría que esperar algunas horas más, producto del paso de incontables cometas, casi todos desaparecidos hoy, la órbita de Palas estaba, en casi todo su trayecto, cubierta por diminutas partículas de polvo proveniente de sus colas, lo que provocaba que, prácticamente todas las noches del año hubiese incontables estrellas fugaces cruzando su colorido cielo nocturno.

Esa noche no fue la excepción, cuatro horas después del ocaso, desde todas partes del cielo, se formaban los finos caminos de luz, de las estelas dejadas por las partículas de polvo que se incineraban, al entrar en la atmosfera, eran una tras otra como si de verdaderas gotas de lluvia se tratase, tal vez cientos de surcos en el cielo, se formaban por minuto, habían varios radiantes varios puntos de ingreso de las partículas, y sobre la cabeza de Rebeca, en el cenit uno de los más activos, al recostarse en el pasto aun húmedo, podía ver como parecían caer cobre ella las estrellas proyectadas desde, prácticamente el centro del cielo mismo.

Esa noche se iría a dormir, bien entrada la media noche de Palas, maravillada por el espectáculo de luces, cuando ya aun después de varios cafés y una segunda cena de pollo y cebada, esta vez con mejor sabor y ahora si caliente; el sueño la venciera, extenuada por el viaje, quedándose dormida sobre el pasto sólo cobijada con su chaqueta térmica.

That night was no exception, four hours after the sunset, from all parts of the sky, the fine paths of light were formed, from the stelae left by the dust particles that were incinerated, when entering the atmosphere, they were one after the other as if they were real raindrops, perhaps hundreds of furrows in the sky, were formed per minute, there were several radiant points of entry of the particles, and on Rebecca's head, in the zenith one of the most active, when she lay down in the still humid grass, she could see how the stars projected from, practically the center of the sky itself, seemed to fall copper.

That night she would go to sleep, well into the midnight of Palas, amazed by the spectacle of lights, when even after several coffees and a second dinner of chicken and barley, this time with better flavor and now if hot; the dream would defeat her, exhausted by the trip, falling asleep on the grass only sheltered with her thermal jacket.
