Bad Things Happen to Good People: Understanding Suffering Through Faith

It is undeniable that faithful, kind-hearted, and innocent people endure immense suffering. Many who love and serve God still face painful trials, losses, and hardships. This reality often leads to one of life’s most difficult questions:

If God is good and just, why do bad things happen to good people?

Isn’t this the same God who is full of justice, love, and truth? The One who is always faithful?

Being Good Does Not Exempt Anyone from Trials

Jesus Himself made it clear that suffering is not exclusive to the wicked. In Matthew 5:45, He said, “He causes His sun to rise on the evil and the good and sends rain on the just and the unjust.” Life’s struggles come to all—regardless of one’s righteousness.

We live in a fallen world, one that was never meant to know pain and suffering. But because of Adam’s fall, sin entered, and with it came sickness, grief, and trials. God’s original intention was for humanity to dwell in joy and peace, yet sin corrupted the perfection He created. Suffering exists not because God delights in it, but because the world is fallen and broken.

Despite this fallen world, Scripture shows us that even the most faithful endured hardship, yet they clung to God through it all:

Job was a righteous man who lost everything—his children, wealth, and health—yet he never abandoned his faith. In the end, God restored him beyond what he lost (Job 42:10).

Joseph was betrayed by his own brothers, sold into slavery, and unjustly imprisoned, yet he later saw God’s greater plan unfold—his suffering positioned him to save nations from famine (Genesis 50:20).

Jesus Christ, the perfect and sinless Son of God, endured the worst suffering—mockery, torture, and death—yet He counted it all joy to reconcile us to the Father (Hebrews 12:2).

Seasons of suffering are not meaningless. For those who love God, hardship is an opportunity—not just for pain, but for growth, strength, and deeper faith.

James 1:2-3 reminds us, “Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance.”

Suffering builds endurance, character, and unwavering trust in God. It draws us closer to Him, compelling us to seek Him more deeply. As Psalm 34:18 assures us, “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.”

Though we may not always understand why, we can trust that God has a purpose. Your pain is not wasted. Every trial refines, strengthens, and prepares you for something greater. In the end, suffering in the hands of a sovereign God is never in vain—it leads to victory, restoration, and an eternal reward.

I feel energized reading this on a good Sunday morning @zoepat
This is the part of the gospel that should be spread more for people to hear and know what it entails to follow God..
When people are mislead that following God is all bed of roses, they tend to run away when they face the reality of life and the journey. It's important to broaden our minds and to also encourage ourselves about what the scriptures says to those who diligently seek Him regardless of the trails and temptations that befalls them..
Thank you for sharing this with us.
