Sweet, Compassionate, and Caffeine-Obsessed

I give you Ada

At first glance, Ada might look like an average 23 year old girl-next-door. She’s got pretty dark brown eyes that glitter in the sunlight and white pearly teeth that match the white lather from her tooth paste when she brushes them.

She’s 5 feet tall and comes from a great family that loves her and vice versa. She’s the sweet, compassionate one in her friend group; she's always the first to wish you a happy birthday and say something to put a smile on your face.

She’s even got herself a healthy relationship with a heartthrob of a man. But as the saying goes “If it’s too good to be true, it’s probably not”. Deep within the chambers of her heart, Ada hides a dark secret that could cause the end of the world as we know it.

She is obsessed with coffee, and not in a cute way.

You might think, “Really, did you have to be so dramatic?” Well, I confess I was a tad bit dramatic, but I promise it’s for a good cause.

We have been friends for over 3 years now, and I should have known straight up the first day I met her. My friend Precious and I walked into the class for the 8:00am lecture and hurried to go look for a seat. All the seats in the front were taken already, all except one, which Ada has saved for Precious.

I was about to go towards the back to find myself a seat when Precious got an emergency and had to skip class. I ended up sitting with Ada on the abandoned seat. She introduced herself to me and gave me a hug.

Not long after, the lecturer came, and the class commenced. I kid you not, throughout the entirety of the two-hour class, Ada relentlessly sipped coffee from her cup.

It wouldn’t have been a big deal if she’d been sipping it casually. I mean, everybody likes coffee, right? But no, she sipped it as though if she didn’t take one sip, she would faint or something. After each swallow, she would let out a long sigh, and at one point, I believe I heard a moan. I brushed it aside; I mean, coffee does taste good.

After the class, we hit it off pretty well. I liked her vibe. Since that day, we have remained close, and one thing I noticed was that she always carried her coffee cup everywhere. I teased her about it every once in a while, but other than that, I didn’t think too much of it. At least not until she invited me to her crib.

As I climbed up the staircase leading to her flat, my nostrils were bombarded with the aroma of coffee beans. The coffee lover inside me grinned from ear to ear, and my tummy rumbled a bit. I finally got to her door and ran knuckle through it rapidly.

“Girl, open this door before I eat you!” I screamed.

“Chill, I’m coming!!” she replied from inside.

She then opened the door, and I ran inside, trying to look for the culprit, causing everywhere to smell so good. I looked around, but only found some chicken in a pan being fried.

“Where is the coffee?” I turned around and asked, perplexed.

“I’m not making coffee,” she answered with a sheepish grin.

“So what has your whole apartment complex scenting like freaking Starbucks?” I asked.

“It’s my chicken,” she replied while walking over to the stove.

“Your chicken? What does chicken have to do with coffee?” I asked, now properly puzzled.

“I marinate my chicken with coffee,” she said.

“No. Tell me you’re joking. Please!” I begged my eyes wide with confusion and disgust.

She just smiled and kept on frying.

I found this funny because I marinate my chicken in coffee too. It gives the chicken a nice rounded flavour:)

You too?😅😅
Now I'm curious. Do you also add other seasonings like salt and pepper to it, or just coffee?
And how does it taste?

And thank you for reading my work, I always look forward to seeing your comments🤗

Yes, I add salt and pepper with other herbs such as basil, thyme, rosemary, garlic, and chilli flakes.
I season the chicken with all the above, then add the coffee and marinate it in a ziplock bag overnight.
This way I can massage the seasoning into the chicken before baking it. Everything helps the seasoning to absorb into the chicken and there is no specific taste of coffee or the individual seasoning. It's a rounded taste:)

Oh okay, I get it now. So coffee isn't the main ingredient in the marinade.
I will definitely be trying this out the next time I make chicken.
Thanks for sharing your recipe!

It's the first time I am seeing this, marinating chicken with coffee.

I can imagine with the taste and aroma would look like... Honestly this sounds wierd but judging from millycf1976 comment, this seems like something people do regularly.

I just drink and that's all.

Same here, I just drink it with a little creamer and some sugar.

The concept is so new to me

This idea of marinating the chicken in coffee is a little strange, but on second thought it might work. I'm going to try it at some point. Thanks for sharing, dear @zitalove . A big hug from Maracay.
