Boarding School Blues to University Brews

In all honesty, coffee was not a tradition in my household when I was growing up. As a matter of fact, we were ignorant as far as coffee was concerned. The common beverage in our house was "tea.”. And by tea, I mean hot chocolate.

My earliest memory of coffee was back in secondary school. I schooled in an only-girls-boarding school.

On a Tuesday afternoon, my biology teacher walked into our classroom, holding a row of instant coffee packets with a frown on her face.

We had been expecting her for the past five minutes, so we weren’t surprised by her presence. What had us puzzled was the bitter expression on her face and the mysterious object that dangled from her outstretched arm.

By the time she reached her table, the whole class had erupted into low murmurs. What have we done now? And what do the packets she held have to do with them?

“One of your parents bought these for her daughter to drink. She said it would help her daughter stay awake at night so she could study.” She said it in a low tone that reeked of disappointment.

“You children are too young to consume this at your age.” She said this while she set the packets down on her desk.

“This is coffee, and I’m showing it to you so that you’ll be aware of the dangers of drinking it at your age,” she expressed, and she proceeded to shove them into her handbag.

She later went on and on about the side effects. Some being that it could affect our fertility and our brain health negatively. I’m sure she mentioned some other side effects, but those were really all I needed to hear before I made up my mind to never consume it.

As time progressed, I came across coffee yet again, but this time I was at the university. My friends all around me drank it like it was water. Every shop I passed had packets of it hanging from their walls.

This got me curious, and thankfully I wasn’t locked up within the four walls of a boarding school, plus I had access to the internet this time. So I decided to look it up and do some proper research of my own. And come to find out, coffee actually has actual health benefits, such as reducing the risk of diabetes, containing antioxidants, and even protecting against depression.

Who would have known?😮

As a student, I definitely needed that last bit, with all the stress from school I was under. I learned that as long as you took it in moderate portions, you basically good. And so my relationship with coffee began, and it’s been beautiful ever since.

During one of my holiday breaks, I introduced it to my family members. I showed them how to make a basic iced coffee, and they damn near abandoned our beloved OG hot chocolate drink for coffee. Now every morning, my house looks and smells like a local café😄😅

My mom even incorporated it into her skin care routine. She now uses coffee as an exfoliant as opposed to sugar, which she used to use before. Apparently, she loved the smooth finish that coffee gives her skin.

So although my caffeine journey didn’t start until my early adulthood, I look forward to many future memories with it.

Thanks for Reading🤗

Coffee in children is not recommended and in adolescents should be moderate, in adults is another thing now when we become elderly I understand that we have to reduce their intake, so I am pleased to know that you investigated to know how true it was what they had told you in school, greetings from Venezuela.

Greetings Actioncats🤗

Yeahh, if I hadn't done the research, I wouldn't have given coffee a second thought till this day.
I'll enjoy coffee for as long as I can til I absolutely have to moderate it.

Thanks for the warm comment😊

How the grown ups in your family that weren't into coffee before got to hop in is amazing. They didn't blast you with many questions...or maybe it's because you're into medical that's why they believed you so quickly 😂

😅😅😅

I think they got to like it because of the way I made it. It didn't taste so bitter.

Thanks for stopping by Kingsleyy🥰

Your opening sentence rings so familiar to my experience.
I love your photos🙌

I also like making coffee scrubs that I use on my body. I've only ever used it on my face a few times though:)))

Thank you so much Milly🤗
It's funny how most of us didn't care for coffee in our early lives.

This was so enjoyable to read.

For me, I've heard about or seen coffee more in movies than in real life, with those their brewing machines. (It was interesting to see that the first thing they do in the morning upon waking up is to brew coffee)

At some point, my elder sister would drink Nescafe so much that it became like an addiction. Apparently she said it helped her stay awake to study.

The first time I tasted coffee, I had this weird taste and the look on my face said it all probably cos I was used to sweet stuff or maybe I didn't prepare it properly.

Since then, I have never returned... Reading your post has made me reconsider.

Well hello Michael, fancy seeing you here😅

Yeah, coffee in Nigeria isn't exactly common or widespread. But the hype around it in other countries is well understandable. It tastes divine if made right.

Your sister is right. Coffee does cause insomnia, I used it a lot back in uni, and I still drink it to this day!

You most likely didn't prepare it well to your taste. You should really reconsider, but this time, look up a recipe and try replicating that instead.

I appreciate you finding your way to my page Michael and thanks for the sweet comment🤗

I can already imagine a sticker that would have been the best response to this...

But oh well. I have to type.

I'd check up recipes online and maybe give it a try.

About the comments... What is it they say about "one good turn deserving another" abi how did they say it?

But for real, your writing was just insightful and educational and it's only right that I commented.

Keeping winning Champ.
