Traditional Ukrainian Wedding in Mountain Village. #2 - Festive Rituals and Procession | Гуцульське весілля, ч.2 [ en | ua ]

According to the ancient tradition, the wedding in Ukraine consists of several parts-rituals, and all this lasted for several days. I was at such weddings when I was a schoolgirl.

За давньою традицією, весілля складалося із багатьох частин-ритуалів, і все це тривало кілька днів. Я була на таких весіллях, коли вчилась у школі.

On the eve of the wedding, friends and family gathered at the groom's house to decorate "A Tree" (sacred tree) - a small tree or spruce or spruce's branches. Married women came and baked a festive wedding bread, it was always richly decorated. According to custom, they brought with them products for baking - butter, eggs, sugar. A Tree was then inserted into the finished bread. It was places on the table in the kargest room, until the cereminy vegins.

The young girls wove periwinkle wreaths, sang and feasted.

The groom with his friends and the bride with her friends walked around the village and invited their guests to the wedding.

Напередодні весілля вдома у нареченого прикрашали "Деревце" або "Гільце" - невелике деверо або ялинка, або гілочки. Одружені жінки пекли весільний коровай, він завжди був багато прикрашений. Також за звичаєм вони приносили із собою продукти на коровай - масло, яйця, цукор. У готовий коровай втикали деревце.

Дівчата плели вінки з барвінку, співали і частувалися.

Наречений з дружбами і наречена із дружками ходили по селу і запрошували своїх гостей на весілля.

У день весілля все починається з батьківського благословення. Якраз із цього місця я продовжу свою фото-розповідь.

The bridegroom asks his father and mother to bless him three times. He kneels before them, and they bless him, holding in their hands kolach (festive bread) tied with red ribbons. Then he holds hands with unmarried young men and women and walks around The Tree. This is repeated three times.

This is happening to the accompaniment of a violinist, and those present sing. It seems that the air is filled with solemnity and mystery.

Наречений тричі просить благословення у своїх батька і матері. Він стає перед ними на коліна, а вони благословляють його, тримаючи в руках колачі (святкові хлібини), перев"язані червоними стрічками. Потім він береться за руки із неодруженими молодими хлопцями й дівчатами і обходить навколо деревця. Це повторюється тричі.

Тим часом музики грають, а гості співають пісню. Здається, що повітря наповнене урочистістю і таїнством.

Before the guests leave the house, the porch is covered with a Hutsul carpet. Unmarried young boys go first, they cross the door with bartka (axe), and they are also blessed with loaves of bread.

Перед тим, як гості вийдуть з хати, ганок застеляють гуцульським килимом. Неодружені хлопці з бартками перехрещубть двері, і їх також благословляють хлібами.

The groom looks very elegant.

After that, the groom and his guests get on their horses and, accompanied by musicians, they ride to the church. There, they are met by the same procession from the bride. Because of the war, this procession went without music, and there were not many horses. And the bride came by car, not on horses. Our host says that before the war there were sometimes up to 50 horses! I can only imagine this stunning spectacle!

Після цього наречений і гості сідають на коней, і в супроводі музик вони їдуть до церкви, вони зустрічаються із такою ж процесією з боку нареченої. Через війну ця процесія йшла без музики, і коней було небагато. Та й наречена приїхала на машині, а не на конях. Наш господар каже, що до війни інколи бувало до 50 коней! Можу тільки уявити.

The church. In the Mediterranean, it is decorated with stone carvings, and in the Carpathians - with wood carvings.

Inside it is very beautiful and somehow cozy. Benches civered with mome-woven Hutsul carpets, and local embroidery everywhere on rushnyky and tablecloths.

Церква. В середзимномор'ї її прикращають різьбленням по каменю, а в Карпатах - різьбленням по дереву. Всередині дуже гарно і якось затишно. Домотканні гуцульські килими на лавицях, і Космацька вишивка скрізь на рушниках і скатертинах.

While everyone waits, I look at the details. Charming! I especially like women shoes called postoly.

Поки всі чекають, я придивляюсь до деталей. Особливо мені подобаються постоли. І вишивка. Сестра молодого молодчина - хоч і в гіпсі, але на рівні з усіма.

The bride arrived with her "best girlfriends" and guests. The girls have such beautiful wreaths. But the most interesting thing is how they look from back - I've never seen anything like that before.

Прибула наречена з дружками і гостями. У дівчат такі красиві вінки. Але найцікавіше те, як вони виглядають ззаду - ніколи такого не бачила раніше.

А це ось гуцульська вишивка, але не Космацька. Теж дуже гарна.

Everyone enters the church, soon the wedding will begin. I don't dare to go in in my by no means festive clothes, besides it's time to go home. My hubby is bored outside. 😊

Всі заходять до церкви, скоро починається вінчання. Я у своїй аж ніяк не святковій одежі не наважуюсь зайти, та й час додому. Чоловік вже знудився надворі.
