Traditional Ukrainian Wedding in a Mountain Village. Part 1 | Гуцульське весілля. Частина 1 [ en | ua ]
This year, on the last day of our short vacation in the Carpathians, my husband and I had an unexpected opportunity to see the beginning of a traditional Hutsul wedding on horseback. (Hutsuls are an ethnographic group of Ukrainians living in the Carpathians). These ancient traditions are now preserved in a few mountain villages. The most famous of them is the Kosmach Wedding (Kosmach is a mountain town), and it is this one that I will show you today. I must admit, when I was looking at the photo for the post today, the feelings took my breath away. It's something... that's hard to put into words.
Цьогоріч під час своєї маленької Карпатської відпустки нам з чоловіком випала несподівана нагода побачити початок традиційного гуцульського весілля на конях. Ці давні традиції нині збереглися всього в кількох гірських селах. Найвідоміше із них - Космацьке весілля, і саме його я вам сьогодні покажу. Зізнаюсь, коли переглядала сьогодні фото для допису, від почуттів аж перехопило подих. Це щось... що важко передати словами.
| So, the Hutsul wedding starts from the gate. Neighbors and just passers-by - all had to see that this family had a feast day. A large wicker arch was hung above the gate, made of pine branches and decorated with colored paper or satin ribbons, flowers, balloons, and so on. Not all Hutsul settlements have a gate because in the mountains they are not used to closing themselves off. And the fence is only so that cattle don't go where they should not, and from snow and wind. That's why there's just an arch above the entrance. It's decorated with a bottle of sparkling wine! | Отже, гуцульське весілля очинається з брами. І сусіди, і звичайні перехожі - всі мали бачити, що у цій родині свято. Зверху над брамою вішали велику плетену арку, яку робили із соснових гілок і прикрашали кольоровими паперовими чи атласними стрічками, квітами, надувними кульками тощо. Не всі гуцульські обійстя мають браму, бо в горах не звикли закриватись - нема від кого. А паркан хіба щоб худоба не зайшла куди не треба, та від снігу і вітру. Тому тут просто арка над в"їздом. Прикрашена не аби чим - пляшкою ігристого! |

| The best clothes were always worn for weddings. Ukraine has a very rich cultural heritage. I don't know if anywhere else there is such a variety of customs, traditional clothes, architecture, songs, language dialects. It happens, for example, that two neighboring villages have different embroidered patterns. | На весілля завжди одягали найкращий одяг. Україна має дуже багату культурну спадщину. Я не знаю, чи ще десь є таке різноманіття звичаїв, традиційного одягу, архітектури, пісень, мовних діалектів. Трапляється наприклад, що у двох сусідніх селах різні вишивані узори. |

| I want to emphasize that all this has nothing to do with the "Sharovarshchyna" created and spread by the Soviet authorities, trying to distort, greatly simplify, and ultimately erase our heritage and our rich culture. | Sharovarshchyna tried to identify Ukrainian culture with peasant and Cossack culture. But here is a festive Kosmach outfit for you. It's not just an embroidered shirt, it's everything - from shoes to accessories. It's a completed image. | Шароварщина намагалась ототожнити українську культуру з культурою селянства, ну ще козацтва. Але ось вам святковий Космацький стрій. Це не лише вишиванка, це все - від взуття до аксесуарів. Це завершений образ. |
| And believe me, it is EXPENSIVE. Once I was looking for an embroidered shirt for me, and I really wanted something in Kosmatsky yellow-hot colors. Unfortunately, at that time, the cost of such an embroidered shirt was very expensive for me. | І повірте, він ДУЖЕ НЕДЕШЕВИЙ. Колись я вибирала собі вишиванку, і мені так хотілося щось саме в Космацьких жовто-гарячих кольорах. На жаль, тоді вартість такої вишиванки для мене була захмарно дорогою. |
| This is a groom and his younger sister. Look at the following photo. Bartka (kind of a hatchet) is a mandatory attribute of every male Hutsul. It serves as both a pickaxe and an ax or hammer. If necessary, it can be a weapon. | Це наречений і його молодша сестра. Зверніть увазу на наступне фото. Бартка (топірець) є обов'язковим атрибутом кожного гуцула. Вона служить і ціпком, і сокирою чи молотком. Як треба, то може бути і зброєю. |

Enjoyed reading the traditions and culture attached to this mountain village. Clothing all hand stitched is priceless, something passed down from Mother to Daughter over many years.
Horses I agree look grand in wedding attire ready for a big occasion as do all the families attending.

Дуже гарно! Звичайно, гуцульське весілля виглядає надзвичайно автентично і чудово, що такі традиції ще десь зберігаються. Але браму, наприклад, роблять і у нас, на Львівщині. Саме там потім відбувається викуп молодої і часом ці торги бувають дуже запеклими))
Так, браму роблять багато де. На Поділлі теж. О, і торги пам'ятаю, бували дуже веселі 😄
Напевно, "сходку" чоловіків в чорних шкірянках до шатра і танці під синтезатор YAMAHA ви теж застали )

The mountain village has a very unique culture, I love the way they decorated everything and their style of dressing is amazing, everything looks so colourful

Actually, I didn't. 😊 The man whose house we rented called me the day before our checkout and said there is their traditional wedding nearby and we have a rare opportunity to see it, and photograph it. I happily agreed and the next day he accompanied us.
