Working at the Docks in Cpae Town
Good day everyone! Zak Ludick here writing to you from Cape Town, South Africa. This week has been a busy one with a new vessel in the Dry Dock in Cape Town for us to work on.
The site is busy and constantly in a state of organized chaos. Three thousand people is an average for day shift on this site and this is made up of around fifty different contractors.
But before I speak further about work... check this out!
In the background of this constant construction site is Table Mountain. In fact the view from the site is laughably beautiful! It is the sort of sight that attracts millions of tourists to South Africa every year.
Generally, I do not think that anyone on site has the time to really appreciate this view. I also get a great view of the mountain on the way in from my area towards site.
Do you know?
Did you know that Table Mountain, named for its very flat top surface is an long extinguished volcano? The molten lava cooled and a granite layer hardened and another layer of sandstone built up on top of the first.
Anyway... time to get back to the subject at hand!
Structure of the site
Above I was explaining how we have around 3000 people on site during the day shift, along with the fifty contractors.
How this is managed is that the ship is divided into Areas. Our customer has an Engineer that is assigned to each of those areas and each Engineer has a collection of Contractors that does work for him.
We work under the engineer who does the Accommodation on the vessel.
Work Pics and some general Rusty pics around the ship
In the below pictures, you will find a general idea of what the ship looks like in its worst areas but to be honest, it has a lot areas that look this bad and worse!
Thank you for reading! I am bushed and need to get myself into bed!
Cheers!

Epic brother. Fond memories of the waterfront and yachts.
Indeed yeah!
This is some important work! Thank you and your coworkers for doing these things! Not enough people are doing this type of work in my opinion, too many are obsessed with college and office work.
I love the industrial look and feel of it all! Cool to have the beautiful Mountain View in the background as well!
Thank you very much!
Indeed! I am very happy to say that I have a wide range of skills and there is a lot of things I can make, build and establish from scratch with a few raw resources.
I see how organized the system there as there are ships in the place with an engineer and you are working with the engineer. Not all things every day may be good but I believe we all get better when we experience the worst. Have a nice time my friend!
Thank you.
