Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Library 84 - Deathwatch, Veteran Bike Squad

Source

Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!

Now known as the Unit Review Library!

What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!

In this series, I will review one unit at a time, picking them randomly.

So let me spin the wheel again and see what I get:

Deathwatch, Veteran Bike Squad

10th Edition Index

It's a Deathwatch Entry and as usual it's... strange...

There is nothing much to this datasheet, its Deathwatch specific but it is basically either 3 bikes or 6, they could be represented by either OG Space Marine Bikes or Outriders so... The price is a mystery, you decide!

80pts for 3 bikes and 160pts for 6 bikes.

Let's check their stats!

Stats

Movement 12"
Toughness 5
Save 3+(armor/invul/Feel No Pain) * Invul only to Ranged Attacks
Wounds 3
Ld 6+
OC 2

Blindingly fast and OC 2 Caught my eye. So 6 OC on 3 models at this speed really could be handy!

Weapons

All the bikers are armed with Close Combat Weapon, Bolt Pistol and the Twin Boltgun that is on the Bike.

They can all have a Long Vigil Close Combat weapon without swapping anything out... so why not?

The Sergeant has a bunch of options, like getting a Shield for a 4+ invul, a slightly better gun, but I would possibly go for the Xenophase blade if not the Shield.

Ranged:

Bolt Pistol
12" Range, 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S4, Ap0, 1 Damage each
Pistol

Twin Boltgun
24" Range, 2 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S4, Ap0, 1 Damage each
Twin-linked

Long Vigil Boltgun
24" Range, 1 Attack, Hitting on 3+, S4, Ap0, 1 Damage each
Anti-Infantry 4+, Devastating Wounds (Basically a Combi-weapon with a different name) Rapid Fire 1

Melee:

Let's ignore the Close Combat Weapon and say you are clever and are running all with Long Vigil Melee Weapons.

Long Vigil melee weapon
3 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S5, Ap-2, 1 Damage each

Xenophase blade
4 Attacks, Hitting on 3+, S5, Ap-2, 1 Damage each
Devastating Wounds.

Abilities

Turbo-boost

When this unit Advances, do not roll for the extra movement. Instead add 6" to this unit's Movement rate.

Thoughts

As strange as this entry is, this is actually a pretty useful unit at 80pts. Much less to do with their combat ability and more to do with their agility and ability to get around the board and hold objectives, do actions at M12-M16 at T5 W9 Sv3+.

They can complete actions and really help with certain secondary objectives.

A solid spend for 80pts!

That makes 4 Deathwatch Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 36.36% Completed and the total Completed on 8.65% Complete!

Thank you for reading!

I like their speed and objective-holding potential. Definitely seems like a solid investment for the points bro

Indeed. High Toughness and High Wounds. The only thing they arent good at is fighting anything meant to be an assault unit or a Monster/Vehicle.

Also, they can go through ruins, they have to go around them.

I'm guessing that the trade-off for their toughness and wounds 🤔

So its 80pts. For the same most armies can just about field a 5 man unit of Space Marines. Which is 10 Wounds at Toughness 4.

These guys have 3 Wounds each so an 80pts 3 man unit has 9 Wounds but at Toughness 5.

They just can't really punch up really strong units.

Seems like kind of a...meh...unit. This reminds me, I need to get to work on my MTG stuff!

Thansk for keeping me inspired with your daily posts, man!

They are great for a regular 2000pts game.

Yes they are Meh. If I play a bunch of strong Deathwatch Veteran units, Killteams and some big Dreadnoughts, are you going to have time to pay attention to an 80pts Bike squad who will mostly be using their speed to stay out of sight?

Meanwhile they will go around claiming objectives and completing Secondary Objectives!

I absolutely love bikes, but the Deathwatch lads bring in quite the aesthetic with that black and silver. Makes me wanna get some when I can afford them lol

Right? And you can mix Ravenwing and Whitescars and other Chapters together!
