Warhammer 40k - Unit Review Library 172 - Astra Militarum, Platoon Command Squad
My word.... so many options... this is going to be some work...
Hello everyone! Zak Ludick here from Cape Town, South Africa and this is a Warhammer 40k - The Great Unit Review Wheel! post!
Now known as the Unit Review Library!
What is it all about? It is not there to just give a stat. It is there to give MY review of the unit!
Also this has become quite the Challenge! With so many units to review in the game the consensus in the hobby community is that I will not have enough time to review all of the Datasheets before the new edition of Warhammer 40,000 came out.
I should have started when 10th edition launched!
498 days since the start of 10th Edition.
This is Review #172, I am 326 reviews behind! (Lowest I have been is 314 behind)
January 2025 we are expecting Astra Militarum and Aeldari codexes as explained Here, so time to focus on THOSE Datasheets!
Astra Militarum, Platoon Command Squad
10th Edition Index
A Platoon Command is part of the Infantry Regiment chain of command in the Astra Militarum. Led by the ambiguous "Platoon Commander" the title they call him may vary into the dozens of variations depending on the origin of the Regiment's birthplace and the size of the Regiment.
A Platoon Commander often has the rank of Lieutenant and they work under a Colonel. But there could also be a Colonel, then 2-4 Majors and then 4-8 Lieutenant.
Equally, the title might be flavoured by culture. Anything from Knight-Commander to Chief Hetman and many more.
On the tabletop there are three distinct flavours of Platoon Command Squads due to the options available to this unit.
They are:
- Full Command - A Platoon Commander, Medic, Master Vox and Regimental Standard bearer and one spare Veteran.
- Veteran Specialist Weapons Team - A Platoon Commander and 4 Veterans toting 4 different special weapons like Plasmaguns, Sniper Rifles or Grenade Launchers.
- Heavy Weapons Team - A Platoon Commander, a Heavy Weapons Team and two additional Guardsmen, you could give them special weapons or make them into your favourite Command units like Medic and Master Vox for example.
No matter the combination, they cost 60pts to field and can be joined by a whole platoon unit. Cost wise, there are several kits to build one of these squads with but it can also take more than one kit to build the combonation you want.
A "Full Command" type unit will cost around $37.
Let's check those stats...

While a friendly Platoon unit is within 6" of this unit, that unit can be targeted by Stratagems even if the unit is Battle Shocked.
Thoughts
Sooooooo many options.
But basically, you want to match the loadout with the squad that you want to field.
Are you taking this unit to hold objectives in the mid-field? Then the Full Command unit is best.
Is this unit going to hang back and hold the home objective? Then Heavy Weapons with an Infantry Platoon with more Heavy Weapons plus Medic and Banner will do!
Leading Catachans with flamers into the enemy? Add more Flamers and a Medic!
There are so many options!
That makes 19 Astre Militarum Datasheets Reviewed putting them on 19.10% Completed. The total Completed is 16.39% Complete! Can I review them all?!
Thank you for reading!

Much as I like heavy weapons, I think the medic, vox, and standard would give better buffs in most cases.
Indeed, lead a unit of Kriegsman to the centre of the battlefield.... should be great!
Epic thx bud epic review as always. Can't wait to field mine someday
I am looking forward to building the models.... Hahahaha!
