Warhammer 40k - The Warhammer App launched today! It is ALMOST perfect!
Nothing is absolutely perfect. Yeah, it took me no less than 5 minutes to find a flaw in this newly launched app but it was not a deal breaker. Overall I am still very impressed with the app.
Hi there. I am Zak Ludick from Cape Town South Africa and this is all about Warhammer 40,000 - the table top boardgame!
So the game's 10th edition of Core rules is officially launching on Saturday. All the factions have already received their 10th Edition reworked datasheets and points and today the App launched.
The App is free to download and is available Here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.gamesworkshop.w40k
Let's have a look at it together!
Rules Reference
First up this app can be used instead of all the very many rulebooks and datasheets.
There is a section you can access the Core Rules and all the Faction Rules. From Combat Patrol to the main gain rules!
I think the intention is to keep the app up to date with new launches so when a new book or datasheet is released that the app updates with the new content! Awesome!
Here I went to the Core Concepts to get an explanation of the "Engagement Range" rule. So if you were playing the game and another rule specified this Core Concept and you wanted to quickly check exactly what is mean by that, you can have a look!
Army Building - Battle Forge
The next useful thing that the app is good at is to build armylists with. Usually we use Battlescribe for this but they have not yet completed the mammoth task of building the 10th Edition Libraries.
This feature is free and has full access for a limited time only. This will probably be for a month. Thereafter it is likely to become a feature you will need to pay for that will be included in the Warhammer Plus Subscription.
Warhammer Plus is a service that allows you access to video entertainment, battle reports, lore shows, painting tutorials and once a year they post you a single miniature. With the App's Battle Forge being included, I think their sales of the $5 a month service will skyrocket!
This is what is looks like if you build a new army. Choose a faction! Then choose what size of battle and what Detchment you want to field them as!
I have selected the Adepta Sororitas, the Sisters of Battle.
First get yourself a Character.
Instead of an Epic Hero that has no options, I have selected a standard Cannoness.
You can see here she starts with a Chainsword and a Bolt Pistol.
There is options that will clearly explain to you: The bolt pistol can be replaced by the following and this means you can select the option and deselect the bolt pistol.
When you select any unit you can enter into their datasheet and get summaries of all their stats, gear, guns and abilities.
This is absolutely awesome because it means that you do not need to leave the army building process to go reference the rules for that faction to check how something works. There are keywords and if you click on them then there will be a bigger explanation of what that rule does.
It folds out and back in again as needed. So while the app looks neat, if you wanted to unfurl everything, you can access a lot of information.
Finally, once selections and wargear is chosen the main army screen shows you a summary of all the gear that the squads have on them. You could use this summary when deploying your forces or for looking for that unit that has that particular upgrade or gun. Or you can, at a glance, see all the ranged and melee weapons that a squad has on them!
An Error?
I did mention that I found an error.
Its not a big deal but basically when working with characters that can have both the standard ranged and melee weapon exchanged for other weapons, you need to be careful how you select the weapons.
If you uncheck both compulsories and then check an option in the one hand's slot and the other hand's slot it will often show you an error that your character's wargear options are in error and cannot be fielded thus.
But if you select one option for the pistol, then deselect the default pistol, then select the option for the hand weapon and then deselect the default close combat weapon... then it gives no hassles.
It is a small bug which they will probably resolve soon enough.
Overall I am really happy with this app and look forward to what 10th Edition of Warhammer 40,000 has in store for us!
Thank you for reading!
Happy hobbying!
Cheers!
