WARHAMMER 40k Lore - Wolf Priests - the Chaplains and Apothecaries of the Space Wolves Chapter
Good day everyone, Zak here from Cape Town, South Africa. Yesterday I added my Wolf Priest to my Collections list for Hive.
The follow up to that is to showcase the lore of the Wolf Priest!
A Mix of Responsibility
As usual, the Space Wolves have officers in positions of power that are not quite the same as their Codex compliant Space Marine counterparts.
The Wolf Priest will look like a Chaplain and will have the followings things in common:
- Black Armor - this denotes his office as a Priest
- Skull Helmet - or wolf skull, this reminds the other Space Marines of their mortality
- The Crozius Arcanum - The axe-like badge of office weapon religious stick
- The Rosarius/Wolf Amulet - Exactly the same thing but with WOLF in it. A mini force field in an amulet.
After that the other similarity is their ability on the battlefield is to inspire others with their Litanies. I assume that theatrically, where monk-like Space Marine Chaplains would be intoning some sort of prayer or yelling litanies of his faith, the Wolf Priest is likely reciting the Sagas of Russ and the Allfather and other such things. His growl is as thunder, his scowl is enough to put any impudent Blood Claw into his place!
The other job that the Wolf Priest fulfills is that of the Apothacary in other Chapters. Thus he is a healer, but also the person who needs to retrieve the gene-seed from the fallen.
Thus the Wolf Priests look after the spiritual and physical wellbeing of the Space Wolves. They are responsible for going into Fenris and selecting warriors to become initiates to become new Space Wolves.
Often this happens during a battle or raid between Fenrisians. The Wolf Priests may select men from the survivors but often take wounded or "dead" warriors and are thus known as the "Choosers of the Slain". They resuscitate these men and make them part of the Space Wolf Chapter once they have gone through the training and transition into Space Marines.
Always an awesome HQ choice, I have more than one of these in my collection!
Thank you for reading!
Cheers!
