Warhammer 40k - Faction Focus - 10th Edition Adeptus Custodes Preview
I need to get these done, more STUFF is getting released at a Dizzying pace... I am getting behind!
So... the Adeptus Custodes, the Golden Boys... we also call them the Adeptus Custards or Banana Boys too... But in all seriousness the Adeptus Custodes are seriously epic! They are the Guardians of the Emperor on his Golden Throne and usually they would be standing vigil, but since the Primarch Roboute Guilliman, son of the Emperor was revived, the Custodes have been playing a more active role in the battles across the Galaxy.
Eye Candy
Gold and Epic armoured might... these guys generally cost a serious amount of points so this would actually be a pretty big Custodes Army!
Army Rule - Martial Ka'tah
Firstup we have the Army Rule that all Custodes get. Even better than Combat Doctrines of the Space Marines, the Custodes player can simple pick one of three abilities every Fight phase and is active for your whole army. These are, however only useful for close combat so that is where you need your Custodes!
Kaptaris Stance - Minus 1 from the to Hit roll when people attack you.
Dacatarai Stance - Gain Sustained Hits 1 on all Melee weapon attacks.
Rendax Stance - Gain Lethal Hits on all Melee weapon attacks.
So it is simple, did you charged by scary close combat units that have weapons capable of hurting the Custodes? Kaptaris!
Need to mow down a horde? Dacatarai!
Need to hurt BIG enemies? Rendax!
It is an effective ability that makes the Custodes capable of meeting just about any threat.
Detachment Rule - Shield Host
Pretty crazy and very simple. Your army has a Feel No Pain 4+ against Mortal Wounds! This enables them to shrug off wounds that no other army can ignore!
Unit Spotlight - Trajann Valoris
Trajann is the Captain-General of the Custodes and thus, the most epic of them all.
His shooting attacks and close combat attacks all do 3 Damage. He and a unit he leads ignore all modifiers to their stats or modifiers to their rolls... well you can Choose to ignore. Meaning you can accept buffs and you can reject debuffs.
So -1T for Nurgle's Blessing? Nope. -1 to Hit because of Stealth? Nope. They do what they please.
He is also Toughness 7 which makes him... ridiculously tough. 7 is a bit of an odd number. But you need 6's to wound him with a S3 weapon. S4-S6 need 5's to wound, S7 needs 4+, S8-S13 needs 3+ and only once you get to S14 can you wound him on a 2+!
He also has Moment Shackle which is a once per battle ability to do one of three things:
He doubles his attacks with his axe. (12 Attacks!)
Or
He gains a 2+ Invulnerable save
Or
He and his unit gains Fights First.
Again, the flaxibility is in your hands and together with Matrial Ka'tah you can whip up some crazy combinations.
Unit Spotlight - Allarus Custodians
Terminators with T7 and W4 each. High damage output in Melee and fairly good shooting. They also get to re-roll Wound rolls against Characters, Monsters and Vehicle units.
This unit is also able, once per battle, at the end of your opponent's turn be taken off the battle as long as they are NOT in close combat. Then in your turn you teleport them back on to the table again!
This can make them fast. You can devastate the enemy in close combat and either try get back into combat someplace else or go and control an objective to win the game.
Unit Spotlight - Prosecutors
The Prosecutors feel underwhelming in the face of all the Adeptus Custodes units. They are part of the Anathema Psykana(Sisters of Silence) however and are there to combat enemy Psykers. Getting a 3+ Feel No Pain against Psychic attacks and both Precision and Devastating Wounds when shooting at Psykers.
This means they can pick the Sorceror out in the squad he is with and they cause mortals on a Wound Roll of 6!
They are also, likely cheap points wise and give you good OC.
Weapon Spotlight - Executioner Greatblade
Again on the girls. Anti-Psyker with Devastating Wounds means when rolling 4 or more to wound, the are Devastating and thus cause Mortal Wounds.
Stratagem Spotlight - Vigil Unending
No need for an Apothecary, just a 1CP Strat to return a model to a unit on full wounds! Like a T7 W4 Allarus Custodian!
Each unit can only get this done once per game though.

A chap who worked for me painted some of these with Alclad holomatic paint. They were a really smooth high-metallic gold, but shimmered with a metallic green tint if the light hit them just right. Rather pretty !
