Warhammer 40k - Battle Report - Space Wolves vs Imperial Knights! What a Rough one!
Good day everyone! I am the sleepless Zak who writes late at night because the power keeps going out in Cape Town, South Africa!
This is another Battle Report of the last game of Warhammer 40,000 that I played against the Imperial Knights! I played a series of matches to get ready for the Sword and Board Tournament that is coming up on the 2nd and 3rd of December.
I did not manage to take a lot of pictures of this last battle because after Deployment and the first turn started, I needed to pour all my skill and attention into the game and totally forgot to take pictures!
The Mission
We rolled randomly on the Leviathan Tournament pack and got:
Take and Hold
Hidden Supplies
Hammer and Anvil
This means that all Objectives are active for scoring and that there are two objectives in place of the center objective. Furthermore that we will be deploying side to side.
Deployment
The Knights rolled a win for Deployment and I was then the Defender, needing to deploy my first unit.
We took turn deploying units until we reached the following setup:
From left to right (Or top to bottom), I deployed thus:
Left Flant unit:
Redemptor Dreadnought
Razorback (Grey Hunters)
Ironpriest
Land Raider (Blood Claws)
Left Back support:
Ballistus Dreadnought
Middle Front - Tank: Wulfen Dreadnought
Middle Back support: Bjorn the Fell Handed
Right Flank Squad:
Vindicator
Razorback (Grey Hunters)
Techmarine
Vindicator
Meanwhile the Imperial Knights set up like this, from Left to Right:
Armiger Warglaive
Armiger Helverin
Knight Crusader
Knight Errant
Armiger Warglaive
Armiver Helverin
Canis Rex
The match was set for an epic battle!
Both armies are fully deployed with no reserves. The side of the battlefield where the tape is, is not in the battlefield and I put my troops there to make them easier to deploy.
We then rolled off for turn one...
Imperial Knights go First!
The Game.
Turn 1
Since I did not take lots of photos of every single round in all the excitement that followed, I will have to describe it all in one go but somewhat chronologically.
Turn 1 the Knights progressed up the board. They deployed next to their home objective and then took control of one of the two center objectives but was out of range of a 3rd objective marker.
The Knights then opened fire! Everything target the Wulfen Dreadnought who absorbed shot after shot after shot....
But was then left standing on 1 wound remaining! Incredible! With a 2+ Save, a 4+ Invulnerable Save and a 6+ Feel No Pain, the Wulfen Dreadnought tanked all of the damage!
My first turn saw me driving forward and taking two objectives, I already held the objective in my deployment zone.
I targeted the Knight Errant with Oath of Moment and Destroyed it with focussed fire! This earns me a quick 9VP in Turn 1.
My Wulfen Dreadnought managed to get into close combat with an Armiger Helverin and stayed there, duking it out.
End of Battle Round 1: Space Wolves 9, Imperial Knights 0
But I did not ALWAYS have good luck! Sometimes things like THIS happens and you just have to roll with the punches!
Turn 2
The Knights did far more damage in Turn 2. They scored 10VP for the Primary Objective and destroyed my Land Raider, one Vindicator and one Razorback!
This earned them a further 10VP!
In my Turn 2, I scored the max 15VP for Primary Objectives. I only managed to destroy one Armiger and gained a 3VP for this.
I dealt plenty of other damage as well and generally was just trying to maintain my momentum.
End of Battle Round 2: Space Wolves 27, Imperial Knights 20
Turn 3
The Knights took a max 15VP in round 3 and then consolidated their damage by killing my Wulfen Dreadnought and the other Razorback, for another 5VP.
In my turn, something incredible happened. Canis Rex, the epic Hero had made it into my backlines. I targeted him as the Oath of Moment target and blew him away!
And then the massive Knight Exploded!
Its nuclear reactor ripped apart and killed both of my Iron Priests, scoring the Knights another 8VP.
Thankfully, I had snared another 15VP from my Primary, 9VP for killing Canis Rex and another 3VP for killing another Armiger.
End of Battle Round 3: Space Wolves 54, Imperial Knights 48
It was getting late and the store started informing people that they were starting to get ready for last rounds. We were both working that say and a bit tired and decided that we would not be able to play another full round and we called the game.
With an additional 10VP for having painted armies, the scores were
64 v 58.
Space Wolves Win!
It was a really great match with a lot of nailbiting moments. I look forward to playing more games with Shaun!
Thank you for reading!
