Gardening - Update, Before and After the last week of the ship

avatar

Hello everyone!

Zak here from an overcast Cape Town, South Africa. Cape Town is known for its winter rains and dry summers... but it is also know from being the province in South Africa of giving you 4 seasons in one day!

Thus I am looking up at the sky and seeing an overcast grey... though it might clear up so I am giving my plants water now, so the water should stay in the soil a little longer.

I have finished working on the ship last week and I have some pictures of what it looked like before that ship was finished, but I had time for my garden on a weekend. And then I have pictures of how things are looking like right now!

Let's get into it!

Before

Herbs and a little bit of veggies. Here we see my Basil, Mint Basil, Garlic and Onions. There is also a bit of Spekboom and Purslane (Which I use in salads and cooking).

At the back, more Basil, Garlic and Onions and the patch I seeded with Carrot seeds.

Here is a different angle on the onions and the future carrot patch.

Here is my little Kobocha Pumpkin plant, just doing its own thing.

After!

This is the herb garden as it stands now! Look at the growth on that Basil!

The garlic looks about the same and so are the onions, their magic happens beneath the soil, so I am not worried.

I have some ground cover growing in this bed. Do not worry, this is intentional!

I am really happy about how everything has sprung up!

Oh, you will see that the Mint Basil looks a bit shorter. That is because @clairemobey took a swipe at them for the kitchen! Haha!

Out of all of my patches where I seeded seeds this is the only one that is showing me something coming up. Garden Radishes. The others all failed!

No beans popped up here. The Mint (real mint, not Basil Mint) is growing back nicely again.

Onions! Onions are doing great! Look at those bulbs sticking out of the ground!

Here are some more! A whole group of them. All of these were grown from Onion Cuttings!

Here is a side view of the Garden with its improvements of growth. I need to fill that bare patch with something. In the next few days I think I will loosen the soil there again and then seed something else that I have.

I have a lot of seeds and some of them may be old and no longer viable.

And then we look at Mr. Kobocha! Look at it go! Massive rampant growth! The soil there is rich and I have been giving it plenty of water. Origionally, this guy had grown up under the shade netting, so I had covered the box partially with shade so as not to shock the plant.

But then it grew towards the full sun and now I just leave it out in the open.

It tried to grow out of the box that it is in and I had to turn it back again... I am considering letting it escape a bit and closing one of the pathways...

We shall see...

What is nice about those broad leaves is that it creates its own ground shade cover!

What goes on UNDER that shade is also very exciting! Here we can see little bulbs which should turn into pumpkins! Three of them in this picture are all closer to the main stem. More will likely pop up along the length of the plant.

I cannot wait to see what happens next!

Thank you for reading this post! Have a great day!

Yeah. I give it a lot of water. The green stuff I do not want, I pluck out and it goes into the compost.

Its a cycle! 😁

I love your onions, and it reminds me to go on with my plan of planting onion this year.

Greetings friend what a joy to be able to see how you have managed to keep to care for your plants, everything that one puts a little love because you see the result in the end, the prize is to see how our crops begin to sprout fruit, although as you say, in some the magic happens in the soil 🤗.

This herbal plant gave me insight into how to plant it because it can also be a natural medicine.

Indeed. Herbs in the garden are also good for ailments.

The pumpkin is thriving! Create a trellis to support its rapid growth and prune the old leaves and unnecessary baby trunks at the lower part of the plant. This ensures the pumpkin receives optimal nutrients and avoids competition for resources. ^_^
