Chai's Shrine: Slowly setting up a raised garden bed with what I have.

avatar

Hello everyone! Zak here from Cape Town, South Africa with another garden expansion update.

This was the year of grief. The year of loss and I had too many funerals to attend in the first 6 months of the year. Also it was winter so I did not go out much in the rain to tend my garden as much as I could have.

I have slowly been getting garden beds ready but while I get the existing beds ready and for seeds to sprout, I thought I would continue my overall plan to expand the garden. I always had areas planned out for various projects and just took it a step at a time.

One of the family losses was that ofnour pet cat Chai. The lovable furball had been struck by a bus and I buried him in my garden. Right in the middle of the veggie garden.

I thought it would be nice to have him nearby while I worked but then, with all the human deaths in the family, I just tended to avoid the area altogether.

So a week ago I started working in the garden again.

It is time to get it ready for Spring and make it better than ever!

This is the area that is Chai's final resting place. The intention is to build a raised garden here using wooden crates.

Selecting pallets - Make sure that you use pallets that were heat treated and not treated with chemicals. Those would hurt your plants!

The pallets were simply cut in half using a sabre saw.

Putting the pallets on the ground to check the sizes.

The look of all four pallets in position.

Dug two trenches and started placing the pallets to check the sizes.

Digging a trench to sink the pallets in a little.

These pallets have large holes that I need to board up.

Boarding up the holes.

The look once the first boarded panel goes up.

One Board done. Now for the second one.

Two boarded up pallets.

Cheers!

This is one of my dreams, building a raised bed on top of the wood. I hope I can build one soon!

!LOL. I will think about it.

I sort-of enjoy the rustic look. Functional yet not uniform.

The pallets were not all the same size but I can make them level by digging a deeper foundation for the taller one.

Slowly but sure!
I have homework to do similar with yours. But I have to search for the wooden first.

Good luck!

I have a lot of wood. I tend to hoard it a little because there is always wood laying around at sites I work at.

Now I am not shy to use the wood for anything.

Depending on the time I get home after work and how the weather is, I will do a bit more work every day.

By the end of the week, it should be finished.

I also do some other work in the garage.

Looks like a suitable shrine for your poor cat. I hope the coming year isn't as grief filled for you and your garden as this one has been xx

Your soil looks quite sandy. How do you nourish it?

I hope so too.

Yeah. I compost at the back behind the garage. When needed, I will also buy compost.
