Accidentally grew a Sweet Potato!

Good day everyone! Zak here from Cape Town, South Africa.

I make my own compost at home. The benefits of this is obvious, being able to use resources that would usually be thrown into the rubbish bin and creating my own plant food.

I do not have a very complicated system. There are two bins/piles. One is to mature to get ready for use while the other keeps receiving fresh kitchen scraps and garden cuttings.

Once in a while I have to move material across from current to the other one, especially when I have used up the mature compost that I have.

As I was doing this, I saw many cool things. Worms and grubs, natural signs of life and health.

Then I found something large and earthy roll out of the pile as I was shoveling, covered in loamy compost.

I had to pick it up because it looked really familiar!

Sure enough, I just dug up a sweet potato!

I took it inside and washed it. Looks pretty good. This is insane! A total fluke! This must have grown from the kitchen scraps.

Now I am really curious to see if I can grow more of them!

Thanks for reading! I will see if I can cook it tonight!

Cheers!

Wonderful stuff! I love composting myself although my wife hates it hahaha but it’s important! Recycle the things that we don’t eat and put it back into nature where it becomes fresh and incredible dirt. The top soil is the most important layer of them all, so we need to support it as much as we can!

Awesome find with the sweet potato dude! Love that.
