CAMBRIDGE PIONEERS
Today marked a rendezvous of 100 driving tech maestros, investors, and captains of industry, converging to become mentors for a groundbreaking initiative—Pioneers at the University of Cambridge. This dynamic project is set to boost and fast-track startup creators within the College community.
Among the star-studded lineup of mentors are trailblazers from tech titans like Stripe, Graphcore, FiveAI, Arm, Improbable, Google, and Balderton Capital. These luminaries have collectively birthed over 100 companies, boasting an estimated valuation of $15 billion and investing in a whopping 800 ventures. With a dominant focus on deeptech (57%) and a significant presence in biotech and life sciences (21%), they bring a wealth of experience and a commitment to innovation.
Diversity is the name of the game, with almost half the cohort being female, and over a quarter hailing from diverse backgrounds, adding a spectrum of perspectives to the mix.
Adding fuel to the innovation fire, Pioneers at the University of Cambridge has secured strategic partnerships with heavyweights like AstraZeneca, Babraham Labs, Hitachi Europe, Judge Business School, and KPMG, providing invaluable support and mentorship.
Between 2022 and 2023, Cambridge-based tech companies raised a staggering $1.3 billion in funding. Noteworthy is that out of the 164 companies securing funding, 45% were pre-seed enterprises.
One shining example of Cambridge's innovation prowess is Nu Quantum, a recent spinout that raised £7 million to spearhead quantum computer networking—a testament to the cutting-edge breakthroughs emerging from this hub of brilliance.
Gerard Grech, the Managing Director at Pioneers at the University of Cambridge, expressed his excitement, highlighting the unparalleled experience of the mentors in building, scaling, and supporting world-changing tech companies. Their collective wisdom is poised to unlock the potential of the next generation of trailblazers tackling humanity's challenges.
Carmen Palacios-Berraquero, Co-founder and CEO of Nu Quantum, herself a mentor in the initiative, shared her enthusiasm for the community's role in supporting academic founders in translating research into impactful startups.
Stan Boland, Co-founder of FiveAI and a mentor in the program, emphasized the pivotal moment for AI and the UK's potential to lead globally. He eagerly anticipates contributing to Pioneers at the University of Cambridge, paying it forward to the next wave of founders.
Applications are now open for the first pre-seed accelerator program, with the chosen pioneers set to be unveiled in February 2024. The future of innovation is looking brighter than ever at Cambridge
