My offline life

The only time I get asked this question is when I'm having a conversation with someone I'd just met or at the talking stage in a relationship hehe as we all have experienced.

What do I do in real life? Aside from blogging on Hive, I'm an accountant in real life, the title sounds big right yeah I get it, at first I thought the same thing, a small girl like me managing the financial aspect of an organization but then I earned it through my education.

I was employed in the role of an accountant last year in a security firm, well that was the role I was aiming for, I've worked with my current organization for a year and a few weeks, so permit me to say I'm an old staff. I was a newbie in the game cause it was my first time working as an accountant so the beginning was kinda difficult, preparing different accounts, I was faced with reality, and now I get to put to practice what I learned in school.

Things I do as an accountant
At the beginning of every month, I prepare what is called an "invoice" Now what is an invoice? It's a commercial document that the seller sends to the buyer showing the actual amount due for payment and the payment method like the seller's account details. This document shows the list of items that were purchased by the buyer, so that to the layman's definition now comes down to my company which renders security services.

We send an invoice to our clients to show the number of civil guards we have in the client's location, and the amount for each guard, now what makes my invoice different is the VAT and Administration charge thats included: why are the administration charges and VAT ( value added Tax) added? the administration charge is included because it's what the company uses to sort out some administrative expenses like sewing of the guard's uniforms which we don't charge the guards for, the boots they wear, face caps, and ID cards, so the administrative charge is the cost incurred in running the daily activities of the organization in our case is neatly knitting the guards before being deployed to their various locations and the administration charge is 10% of the gross, note this charge isn't fixed it differs depending on the services rendered by an organization. Now the value-added tax (VAT) is what the company remits to the federal government which is 7.5% of the administration charge, the VAT is remitted to the federal government on or before the 21st of every month, not remitting after the deadline attracts a penalty.

The organization has more than sixty clients, and most times it takes me two days to prepare the invoices when I'm done I'll send them for printing, I send some online via email, and after printing I sign them, make photocopies of each for accounting purpose then use my company's customized envelope to address the invoices and send them out to the clients, I don't deliver the invoices though, the company has a patrol officer that delivers the invoices. Then I'd make use of the photocopies to prepare my general ledger account, the individual ledger accounts, and the receipt books, and then I prepare the expenditure account for every month, most times what I do after preparing the expenditure account for two months, I'd compare it to the previous month to see if the expenses incurred increased or decreased.

Lastly, I prepare the payroll also known as the vouchers, which is a document showing the amount payable or you can say it's a document that contains the guard's salaries. What I do is very important to society because it helps every business owner to know the financial activities of his/her organization to enable them to make effective financial decisions by the end of the accounting year. Without these accounts the company won't have a direction it's heading, the accounting sector is the most important aspect of an organization and that's why every company has an accountant to track the inflow of cash and keep a record of every financial activity. There is a statement I hear from people often they say "if a business falls blame it on the accountant" In my mind I was like why?

I don't think I will be able to change being an accountant for anything else, I love what I do, and I know there are some risks involved in what I do but then I'm always careful and accurate because managing another person's finances aren't an easy job, often you'd be called to give an analysis of how each penny was spent. That's why in accounting keeping records is the major thing.

My first job was as an accounting analyst in a large supermarket chain, I was in charge of the weekly payroll for the main office employees, I did bank reconciliations, and also the vouchers related to grocery, meat and vegetable sales in the supermarkets. I calculated shrinkage, kept petty cash, and supported internal and external auditing. Eventually I was put in charge of monitoring the monthly accounting closings. It was a real school for me, if you like that continuous area, it is closely related to auditing, and also helps the company to quantify its profits or losses. Best regards.

Wow, you did a lot on that, did you learn it or you were just faced with it as a reality? Accounting is very much related to audit, that's after the professional classes are been taken.
