Alajuela and the Poás Volcano: History, Culture and Nature in the Heights of Costa Rica

At two thousand meters above sea level, the city of Alajuela clearly shows that it is very much on a par with the country's capital, located 18 kilometers to the southeast. And it is no wonder if we think about the fact that the independence of Costa Rica was declared there in its City Hall on September 15, 1821.

But beyond all the comforts that it can offer as any modern city, we really have not come to stay. We have already admired its architecture and the kindness of its people, we enjoyed the good weather and a good meal at the Mirador La Luna restaurant 700 meters west of the Pilas school, (506) 442-3829, we walked through its streets among mango trees, we went to the Central Plaza and the Cathedral built in 1854; we spent some time at the Juan Santamaría Historical Cultural Museum and we decided that it was fine, we will go to visit that place for which we came to this city.

The impressive Poás Volcano rises to an altitude of more than 2,700 meters in the central mountain range, 35 kilometers north of Alajuela. A crater one kilometer in diameter and 300 meters deep is almost the largest in the world. But that's not all. The residents of the area were already evacuated in 1989 and 1994 and after climbing the volcano through an immense and dense jungle forest full of animal life, we reached the top to see the immensity of this still-hot crater. Seeing these active fumaroles and still geyser-type eruptions is a spectacle that is not repeated anywhere. Surely you could never imagine being able to climb a still-active volcano, much less a colossal one like this. It's like being on the edge of the planet's throat.
