Why Are We Able To “Prep” In Universities On Our Own But Can’t In High School

Just for context sake, prep is evening studies or personal studies here which is mandatory. Maybe this applies to just me so let me know what you guys think in the comments.

Having evening studies or prep as we call it here is a mandatory form of studies where we students go to class to have personal our personal studies. It’s a good thing if you look at things at face value but when you analyze like the way I have and like to think, it’s actually a big worry.

I schooled in a senior high school we’re our schedule was pretty tight. We started class at around 6am and ended at around 4 - 4:30 pm. School originally closed at around 2 but due to forced extra classes added to our timetable, we used to close at 4pm.

I was in the boarding house and so dining was around 5 - 5:30 if I can remember 🤔. I used to dine a lot and so I wasn’t missing dining hall food. So just imagine you closing class at 4:00 pm and having to dine at 5 pm. Very stressful. We used to spend more than an hour in the dining hall sometimes and by the time you’re out, it’s already 6pm.

My school was an Islamic group and so we had a mosque we prayed in. So, immediately after dining you have to go to the mosque and pray. After prayers then straight to preps.😅

Man, how I managed to survive this schedule surprises me now. These stress levels isn’t for me.😂

Maybe that’s why immediately I landed in class for preps, I slept. Like for real, the number of times I was able to pull through the entire two hours, only God knows. Not sleeping during the day makes it difficult for me to be active at night which most at times was the case.

That made me question why preps was compulsory and not optional. Cos let’s face it, if you have a conscience and you know why you’re in school, at some point during the semester you’ll study. Also, those that used to study during those prep hours used to even have extra midnight studies and weekend studies on their own. That just made me think of preps was optional, those that’ll study will study.

A lot of people didn’t agree with this saying we need some form of control or else we wouldn’t study. I agree back then but I don’t agree so much now that I have made it through 3 years of university life.

In the university no one forces anyone to study. If you care about your grades, you’ll go and study😂. This has been the case for me and a number of people. It makes me think if preps wasn’t compulsory, I’d still study at some point in the semester. I mean I already used to during weekends and especially very early in the mornings on Sundays during my time in high school.

Over here in my university, I find myself in class 5-6 times in a week out of the 7 days which can be stressful too but what can I do? The high school teachers told us we wouldn’t have to study much in the university but man, that was all a fluke. We’re even studying more than we did in senior high.😂

If we can study on our own here that it’s not forced and we have our phones, laptops and movies and everything at our disposal, why wouldn’t we be able to study in senior high without all these.

Or is that we’re not more mature and e have a sense of what is at stake? Or maybe the preps in senior high prepared us toward this journey.

What do you think is the reason for this guys? Do you wish personal studies, night class or preps should have been made optional? Let me know your thoughts.

Thank you.

When I was in Senior High School, it was not strict. Maybe because it was a pandemic, and I didn't learn from the modules they gave. I only highlighted some important details, but it's still better if they taught it using F2F. I learned some skills, like how to manage my schedule and prioritize deadlines, but not the lesson in the modules,, haha. However, when I turned first-year of college, the tables turned. I was always praised by my classmates and professors how diligent I am haha. Not bragging but just want to inspire.

Anyway, thank you for sharing your experience with your evening studies or preps during your time in SHS. It caught my interest when I saw the different perspectives on whether preps should be compulsory or optional. The most exciting part of being in the university for me is the vacation😂

Maybe studying that way during the pandemics is what helped you to get the accolades from your mates in college.
Vacation always comes with a very big relief.

Someone like you who likes food a lot 😂😂 why wouldn’t you dine a lot?😂

What am i doing in that picture? We will meet in court.
We study in the university because we are mature enough to prioritize some stuff. No one wants to fail in the university so the only option is to stick to those books.

😂 please I don’t like food. I only eat cos I have to eat.

I haven’t been served so I’m not meeting in any court. Maybe that’s true about studying cos of maturity.

The preps did us good bro. Learning is a habit we have to learn. Preps stood in to teach us how to sit for long hours to study.
If preps wasn’t there at senior high, many of us wouldn’t have been able to make it to the university. It trains us and give us a chance to have a life in university.

So it was good we had it. I can only remember sleeping at that time though rather than learning🤣🤣🤣🤣

😂 it did teach us to sit for long but at before the preps tiredness had already creeped in and you’d probably have only 45 minutes to an hour studies.

😂 even the sharks slept? Wow

I think your high school needed some good council on student affairs. The human body needs rest after work else there could be a break down and yours came by you sleeping during preps. The after school forced classes in my opinion was unnecessary, even if was, they should have only held that for like an hour or prolly thirty minutes so as to give y'all time to rest before any other thing. Good thing you scaled through.

Actually in the university we all have the opportunity to exercise our free will, no one forces anyone to do anything, everything is by will but the good part is we all know why we're there and study at the end of the day. Studying is essential not just for students alone but when it's forced I don't think that's a good thing. Humans were created to be able to make choices

You’re absolutely right here. The school probably needed to take the extra classes off. I just wish someone raises that topic so they look at it.

Everyone knows why they’re in the university and that’s probably why we tend to study so much.

Yep!! That's very correct. Not studying is at one's detriment

I believe they forced the prep on us that time because we weren’t so matured and we still needed guidance in everything. But yes, that thing was unnecessary. I could get get there and fall asleep in less than 30 minutes. The other option was to talk throughout but I just couldn’t study.

Now that we are here and more matured, no one needs to tell you that you need to study and you find yourself in the way to class. This time de3, if you like, sleep 😂

😂 if you like sleep and see? No one will tell you what 2+2 is?

It was really forced on us. Very unnecessary.😅
