Picking Fruit at our Farm

Farm life is different than city life. For one thing, we go to bed earlier (around 10pm) & I wake up much earlier (around 5am).

No time for a proper breakfast, because we need to pick fruit, before the sun comes out.

So, around 7 am, we head to the fruit trees, with our wheelbarrow, trays & stick to dislodge out-of-reach fruit.

Sometimes, the best way to do that, is to climb the tree—which we did, more than once.

It was rewarding to return to our farm —less than two months later— and see that the sick trees which we had tended to, were doing better & bearing fruit!

We collected guavas & two types of mangoes 🥭 for the better part of the morning. It’s an art, I’m learning, how to determine when a fruit is ripe. Color is key & those that are over ripe & have fallen to the ground, we also collected to add to our compost heap.

Our long-term plan, after we’ve shared our fruit harvest with friends & family is to freeze the pulp of the fruit and maybe start a small business— to help pay for the costs of the farm.

One of the most satisfying feelings in the world is harvesting your own food. Just like what you are doing now. Congratulations on your harvest.
