Batsto Village - Digital

I have a confession to make: I played hooky today. Well, sort of. I took the day off (VP approved) and went on a daytrip into New Jersey.

There is a small historical site in Wharton Forest named Batsto Village. There is plenty of information about Batsto here and here, but the tl/dr of it all is that Batsto Village was founded in the late 1700's, became private in the late 1800's, was purchased by the State of NJ in the 1900's, and is now a "living museum" site.

Many of the buildings have gone through some form of restoration, but all remain true to the original design and function; the wooden beams may have been replaced, but they were replaced in the same location as the original.

My favourite building was the mansion. There are tours of the inside which, sadly, I was not present for, but the external of the mansion was beautiful.

It was a much larger site than I was expecting. I was able to take my time, take photographs with a few cameras, read some things, and enjoy myself over the course of a couple of hours. It was very definitely worth the trip!

I love "living museum" sites! They make history come alive for you and what better way to learn? We actually have some pretty nice ones, especially where you are on the Eastern Shore.

This one looks like it has a lot to offer and I need to look it up and see where it is located. Thanks for the sneak peek!!!

If you love rails, don't miss the awesome one they have in Baltimore! I think it is up high on my list of the best rail museums I have ever seen!

I do love trains and rails! The museum in Strasburg, PA is one of my favourite. I haven't yet made it down to the one in Baltimore but it is on my list of things I want to do. There is also an old steam line in West Chester (I think - I have it bookmarked somewhere).

I'm glad I found this one. There was definitely more there than I was expecting.

Exactly. They're really a lot of fun. I enjoyed being able to actually go inside some of the buildings, too, even without attendants there. Way cool.
