Gluconeogenesis - Formation of glucose from non-carbohydrate sources
This is my first post on Steemsocial, and this time I will discuss about the process of forming Glucose by the body naturally known as Gluconeogenesis.
Humans are born with a body that is extraordinarily well-designed for survival; some natural processes that occur in the body are too difficult to explain scientifically because our organs work so well.
What is Gluconeogenesis?
Gluconeogenesis is a process carried out by the human body to form glucose without using energy sources from carbohydrates. The process occurs when the body lacks glucose, this process involves the liver and kidneys.
The main source of energy for the human body is generally from glucose which is obtained from food and will become Adenosine triphosphate (ATP) which is a substance to carry to the body's cells. When there is a shortage of glucose, the body can replace it in several ways, one of which is by using other energy sources from fat or protein. When the body lacks carbohydrates, gluconeogenesis will cover the body's demand for glucose; however, some neurological systems and erythrocytes require constant glucose.
The human body performs gluconeogenesis to prepare for a lack of glucose and to maintain it available so that the body can function normally. For example, when someone runs IF (Intermittent Fasting) or a low-carb diet, there aren't enough carbs to convert into Glucose, the body will employ Gluconeogenesis to shift other energy sources into Glucose.
Benefits of Gluconeogenesis for the body
The main benefit of gluconeogenesis is to maintain glucose stability in the body when someone is fasting or dieting to maintain an ideal body weight. In addition, when the body has excess glucose in the body it will also have a negative impact like obesity, diabetes, and other adverse effects that will trouble the body.
The process of forming glucose from non-carbohydrate substances will help prevent someone from the negative effects of low sugar levels.
Those who are managing a program to reduce weight must understand the process of gluconeogenesis because there are still many people who think that carbohydrates are the only source of energy for the body, which makes them forget to meet other needs like protein, and fat also have a vital role for the body.
