Replicating A Sunburst Granny Square Bucket Hat For A Friend

(Edited)

Hello everyone✨,

It's another Monday and I'm here to share my crochet work with the amazing people of this community. I've mentioned a few times that for my first year as a crocheter, I wanted to do projects only for myself. Why? Because I'm still fairly new to the world of crocheting and I wouldn't want to mess up a client's request. So, I decided to take one whole year to get better at my skill.

How has it been so far?

It has been really enthralling. I like how I've been able to make over fifteen projects in the span of seven months. Although the projects are a combination small and big (mostly small) inventions, it still feels amazing that I've come this far. I hope to reach greater heights someday.

With that, I made a crochet bucket hat nineteen days ago which I used as an entry to the just concluded diy hub sun contest. A friend of mine saw the bucket hat and immediately wanted to snatch it from me. After so much dragging and deliberation she suggested that I made a bucket hat for her. Hehe. If she was a random person, I would have turned down this offer but I decided to give it a try.

She sent me a picture of what she wanted and also provided the yarns that I used for the project. Since she provided the yarn, my job was just to make the bucket hat.

Materials Used

  • Yarns(yellow, brown and black)
  • 4.5mm crochet hook
  • Yarn needles
  • A pair of scissors

Procedure

IMG_20230626_191353_623~2.jpg

Day one: I started by making the "sunburst" granny squares for the side of the bucket hat. Sometime in March, I felt that making granny squares were the toughest things to do but now, I always look forward to making them.

IMG_20230626_203857_624~2.jpg

I made five granny squares in total. You can either increase or decrease the number of granny squares depending on how wide your head is.

IMG_20230707_015617_792~2.jpg

After making the sunburst granny squares I went ahead to join each piece together using a flat stitch. There are two ways to join the granny squares; using a flat stitch or leaving a long strand and then using a yarn needle.

IMG_20230707_003358_822~2.jpg

Day 2: After I finished joining the granny squares, I went ahead to make the top of my bucket hat. She didn't want the top to have a granny square like mine, so I made a normal circle with half double crochets.

With that out of the way, it was time to join the top with the granny squares. At this point, I realised that I didn't keep track of the total number of stitches so I had to start counting. This is to ensure that the stitches on the top and side were equal hence, there would be no lump.

Day 3: it was time to make the flaps of the bucket hat. Again, she said she wanted something long enough to cover her face from the scorching sun and that is exactly what I made for her.

IMG_20230707_103652_195~2.jpg

This was how the bucket hat looked once I was done with the flaps but she specifically said that she wanted a yellow line at the end of the bucket hat.

The yellow line at the base

With that, I sewed in the loose ends that I didn't work over, cut out all unnecessary embellishments and I was done with the hat.

IMG_20230707_145922_823~2.jpg
Me wearing it with the flaps downward

She liked it very much in the end and I was pleased. It took me three "inconsistent" days to finish this sunburst granny square bucket hat and I must say that my crocheting speed has increased a whole lot.

A view with the flaps up

It can be worn in two different ways; with the flaps folded upwards or with the flaps downwards. I would prefer wearing it with the flaps downward but the owner of the bucket hat prefers it the other way round. So which way would you prefer? Upwards or downwards.

Do have an amazing Monday.

All images used belong to me

With love, wongi ✨

Dear @wongi you are so talented, I would definitely rock this bucket hat, it would look great on children as well🥰 both ways go for me though, for children, upwards seems better.

This is exactly what I did after getting my sewing machine. I perfected my skill of sewing by making my outfits and whenever I want to try on a new outfit or an outfit undone- I make it for myself, first and foremost.

The bucket cap is beautiful 🤩 Well done dear @wongi💕

This hat is slammin’!! You did your thing @wongi and should be so proud. The sunflowers look amazing, the whole hat is so cute. I prefer to wear flaps down due to the way I wear my hair 😄.

So glad she loved it and so glad you’ve accomplished so much already in your first year. Keep it up!! 😃👏🏽

She sent me a picture of what she wanted and also provided the yarns that I used for the project

She didn't want the top to have a granny square like mine

I think I'm missing something. The part where she sends the money for your work??😂

She even had demands. Lmao, whatever happened to beggers can't be choosers?

Again, she said she wanted something long enough to cover her face from the scorching sun and that is exactly what I made for her.

You're very generous, you know that? This friend must be very important. I hope it's not jhymi cos if it is, she might be pissed when she sees this.😂

3 days! Yo this isn't something for me. "The results is totally worth it". This is what I should've stopped at, but hell 3 days is a lot, so no.😂😂 That is one nice looking hat though. We'll have to add this to the list of things I'll be getting from you if I ever land in Naija:)

ps: I wrote my commentary as I read the post, so these are genuinely what I was thinking as I read😂

Oh, this part doesn't exist😂

I hope it's not jhymi cos if it is,

Naaah, it's not jhymi😅

3 days! Yo this isn't something for me. "The results is totally worth it"

The three days is totally on me. It's a project that can be finished in a day but I had other things to do.🌜

We'll have to add this to the list of things I'll be getting from you if I ever land in Naija:)

There is a list🌝😅. Or you just created one?

Oh, this part doesn't exist😂

Ah how's the most important ingredient missing? Do you plan to ever monetize this skill?

It's a project that can be finished in a day but I had other things to do.

Oh okay. Understood.

There is a list🌝😅. Or you just created one?

Whether or not there's a list is not really important. Getting me my own replicate of that hat is.😂

Do you plan to ever monetize this skill?

Eventually. When I feel I'm close to perfection. May take a while tho but there is no rush.

Getting me my own replicate of that hat is.😂

Okey dokey. If you eventually get to Nigeria, I'd gift you one of it as a welcome gift. Deal?😌
