Thinking back on this classic MMORPG, Tibia went much further than just an online game
A relic in the 2D MMORPG world
Tibia is a MMORPG released in 1997 by a team of Germans that later came to be called Cipsoft a game that from the beginning to half of development did not have the best graphics for that time and that its gameplay without any sound effect made it a laughing stock for those who had no involvement with the game, among many versions released so far the ones that are considered golden times by players are versions 7. 4, 7.6 and 8.0, the other versions included updates that drastically changed the direction of the game for the most modern times in terms of gameplay, skills, graphics and additional mechanics.

Tibia went far beyond a simple online RPG where you needed to kill any creature to increase its level and so on, every element of the game, the cities, the monsters and NPCs had a relationship with the world in the game and nothing was there by chance, the dialogue with the merchants was much more than a simple buy and sell, you could interact as if you were another player talking with messages in the textbox, dominant guilds promoted the content within the game with wars, quest services and organization against those players who did not respect the players rule, yes different from the general rules of the game the players had their own rules even when a cave was being used to get money and experiences you simply could not go out stealing, you had to wait your turn not to suffer the consequences of death, and in Tibia my friend, death is not pleasant at all.

Tibia death penalty
Until the above mentioned gold times versions the penalty for death in Tibia was very different from the others, before 7.0 if the player was killed by creatures or other players he had his character deleted from the game as if he had really been killed in life, with time a community of new players begged for this system to be improved since it was not worth dedicating hours and hours to the game and in the end possibly die by carelessness. So in the next version the penalty for death was changed from permanent to losing your inventory bag with the chance of losing some equipped items and a good percentage of experience.
But killing another player was almost a shot in the foot since after killing them you received a marker (sort of skull icon in varying colors depending on the amount of kills during the period) that all other players could see and kill you without being penalized as a murderer, it was almost a free pass to kill someone and steal what they stole.
My time in the game

I always liked to play Paladin in any server, Paladin different from the classic paladin that has some involvement with the faith or a protective warrior class was a class focused on physical attacks at distance, an archer who could use spears, bow and arrow, crossbows, shurikens and even small stones to attack your opponent, I started in 7.4 versions and still prefer this on alternative servers that share the same feeling that this version was the best of all removing the issue graphics is a fact.
We did not have any skill points to distribute, instead we had to improve our character through training, if I wanted to improve my ranged attack I should be attacking for a few hours with any ranged weapon, the same for shield, magic, sword, axe, club, fishing and even hand to hand combat which was the worst of all due to the low damage done even at great levels of training.
I have fought in numerous wars in Amera, and the wars in those days were only for experienced players since the skills in Tibia were triggered by typing words, an example was if I was with a mage and wanted to use his ultimate skill that invokes a big explosion in area I needed to send the phrase exevo gran mas vis and then the excitement started, it was a danger because this skill did not differentiate friend from foe and you could unintentionally end up eliminating your own team or killing someone unintentionally and resulting in many punishments.

Today I am retired from the game, but sometimes I get in the Discord with my friends and we select a server to play, today the game is very advanced and changed a lot the gameplay and the graphics have improved 100% in all aspects, recently I saw on some news site related to the game that they intended to add sound effects in the game, who knows I do not get excited and start a new marathon from scratch with the Hive community in the world of Tibia? Maybe.

Yes, I've seen this game before, but I didn't see the details you mentioned. Isn't the death penalty too cruel? I mean, you can play this game for 30 hours and your account gets wiped with one mistake. Thank God they fixed that. And I heard from another Hive writer that there's real money to be made in this game.
Yes it was a big problem that you lose a few hours dying only once, but it helped people not to go out killing anyone to not become a target too, about the money gain is possible thanks to the concept of acquiring difficult quest items that people don't have the patience to collect and sell for Tibia Coins, Tibia Coins is a non-crypto market currency, but accepted in game markets in exchange for money and vice versa.

I like MMORPGs, although I'm not very sure why - perhaps I just like the feeling of progression and exploring with some stories to add on. I still play Maplestory today and while it's very different from Tibia (in all the ways, for example we don't have PvP) I think the charm of it still lies. You have the community you're with (a guild, something like that), things to grind, and things to have fun together.
This death penalty you mentioned reminded me of a long time ago when I was looking to try out Runescape, since that time they released a HTML5 version and it looks pretty cool. There they have something called a "hardcore mode" where if you die your character goes poof, and it sounds close enough to what you have there. I didn't really proceeded too far with the game (my PC sucks during that time) but the idea of a permanent death in MMORPGs stuck with me ever since. In Maplestory, if you die to mobs you simply get an EXP and drop rate penalty that you have to wait for several hours to wear off, so you could reasonably continue to do your farming after that. It's way more forgiving, which is, well, good. I lost count of the amount of times my weaker characters died to falling debris in some maps. Imagine going through a portal and the next thing you know is that you died because a debris combo dropped on your head before the map is fully loaded!
The "training" feature of Tibia you mentioned is really something I hoped to see in MMORPGs, glad to know that it actually exists! Although in a game that I never played, lol. Does the game set a limit on how many things you can be good at? Like a hidden skill point limit of some sort, because I thought it would be a little bit too good if you can have a character that is good at everything...
Thank you, I appreciate your comment and the willingness to share your ideas regarding this post, about the training each vocation has a specialty and advantage to train, you can create a mage who has skill with the sword but the time you will have to spend to advance with this skill is more than 50% of that needed for a knight for example, I remember that knights could not pass a certain amount of magic because the training to increase the level could last a whole year, and believe me they have done it.
That's pretty cool! Quite an ideal system I would say. I'm imagining all those hardcore gamers taking turns farming a single account to try the limits on this and getting the result after a year of experimenting lol. They could release a thesis on this 😂
Older MMORPGs introduced a type of freedom instead of assigning players a role to cooperate with others. I've never heard of the 'spell-typing' system but it sounds like it would be stressful! Seeing a bunch of enemies incoming and mistyping the wrong incantation. I'm glad you and your group keep returning to Tibia. Thank you for sharing your experiences in the game!
This typing thing was quite difficult indeed, but I have to think that the spells were short and in Latin, if I remember healing could be activated with exura only, we had the real battle challenge. Today we have hotkeys in the game and we can use spells by simply pressing them.

Until today I can say that I really like this game, and at some point I would like to play it again, although I feel that nothing is like the time before (since I had more friends who liked this game), still I think that the evolution of the game has gotten better and with everything they have put into it, it is easily enjoyable :) this post fills me with nostalgia, greetings.
