This post introducing one of the simplest, back to the basic ingredient snacks/breakfast yet delicious! 2 simple ingredients: eggs and sticky rice could make this delicious breakfast on skewer and it's widely consumed in the Northeastern Thailand, 'Khao Jee (ข้าวจี่)'.

Khao Jee (ข้าวจี่)

Khao Jee is basically sticky rice formed into a little thick rectangle (or sometimes, circle or whatever shape the one who makes it feel like), covered with some eggs and grilled till it gets that brown-ish golden-ish and a little charred. A little salt sprinkled and bamn, salty & sweet source of carbohydrate and protein ready to start the day! Besides that, it also eaten as a snack.

Khao Jee is originally from Isaan or Northeastern Thailand but nowadays, you can also find it here and there across all parts in Thailand as well.

Khao Jee at its origin

As mentioned, it's from somewhere Northeastern Thailand so when we had a chance to go visit one lovely little town up there, I just had to give it a go at least one of two of them. To be specific, it's Chiang Khan! I have already mentioned how nice Chiang Khan is in the early morning in my previous post about this beautiful town by the river!

Luckily there's one just almost right by where we're staying and it's a good one! The seller is the local who's born and raised there. She's even kind enough to recommend a few other spots for some good local breakfast which we later went to visit.

What does Khao Jee taste like

If you know how egg tastes like (duh! #lol) from the outside it tastes just like that. Maybe just a little salty from the seasoning as well. It's a little crispy from the outside then getting soft from the sticky rice from the inside. It also has that unique char smell from grilling it with charcoal so that's another one of its charm. Very quick grab and go kind of snack or breakfast.

After that we were just walking and biking around the street of Chiang Khan enjoying the morning vibes by the Khong river. Really lovely! A few coffee shops here and there so we also get a cup of Thai lemon tea which really freshen us up. (it's still a good amount of heat in the morning).

Back to the place we stay, Tao Kae Lao, just to rest a bit and enjoy the view from our balcony for the last time before leaving to the next destination!
