Space is meaningless without light. A building speaks through the silence of perception orchestrated by light."

Steven Holl

Have you ever visited a convent? In today's adventure I invite you to walk the streets of my beautiful and ancient city known as the First Born of the American Continent to get to know the colonial designs and architecture that this place has to offer.
As I have told you in a recent post I dream of someday being able to travel all over my country in search of new adventures and unforgettable experiences that leave indelible traces in my mind and heart because I feel admiration for all the natural monuments, architectural and all the beautiful landscapes that the Creator gives us in this beautiful nation including my city (Cumana) which is located on the coast bathed by the waters of the Caribbean Sea.
This time we will go in the carriage of time and travel to the ruins of the San Francisco Convent located in the historic center of the city, in front of the Ribero square near the Gomez Rubio bridge, one of the most important of the town with access to the Guaiquerí park and exit to other municipalities of the state.
This convent is approximately three hundred years old and was declared a National Monument for its importance in colonial times, although most of it is currently in ruins there is an area that is in good condition for living and today there is an office of the UDO (University of Oriente).

Something very peculiar that I must emphasize is the importance that this convent has for the citizens in general, since its facilities gave rise to the house of higher education known as the Universidad de Oriente, where young people from the locality as well as from other neighboring municipalities or the state could study for their bachelor's degree. Over the years this university brought great advances in the educational, cultural, social and economic aspects of the population in general. For example, the main source of income was fishing, commerce and tourism, but with the opening of this house of studies many young people and professors came from another state to make their lives in this new environment. In view of what was happening, many homeowners began to remodel and build annexes to rent to the new residents of the city. Public transportation also increased due to the great demand for the amount of people who had to move from one place to another. Hence the great importance of the San Francisco Convent for this city, as I say, we are indebted to it.

The San Francisco Convent has facilities that cover an entire block, in addition in the front part it has four wooden doors, being one of these the main one that is framed between two columns, in addition it has two windows with wrought iron grills in form of semiarch.

The building was built with resistant material since we live in a seismic zone and with a colonial style.
The door that is on the left side of the main one has a semiarch shape, with two columns that are known as chaguaramos, also in the upper part it has two small ornaments and a symbol of a cross in a semiarch.

The main part has four columns, two of them protruding above the roof with windows in the middle of both columns in the shape of a flower.

Until the next adventure and I invite you to visit my wonderful city where you can taste a rich gastronomy, enjoy the warm and refreshing waters of the Caribbean Sea and a country atmosphere in the different towns.

See you family.

Peace and well being

Greetings @virgilio07. Fascinating landmark! Heritage sites like your featured ruins of a convent allow us to connect with our valuable history, especially if that prestigious building contributed to the educational legacy of that region. Congrats on the vital preservation and maintenance of one of your icons of cultural significance! 😊

Hello friend, for me it was a pleasant surprise to know that the most important house of study in the east of the country began in the facilities of this convent.
I thank God for allowing me to know the amazing history of characters and places through the tours I do in my city.

Blessings

Exactly friend @virgilio07. Not judging a book by its cover pretty much applies to architecture as well. We could never tell a landmark's history just by its mere appearance. It simply pays to do some research. And I'm glad you got to learn of the historical importance of that ancient convent. Thank you for this marvelous feature. Blessings! 😊
