Both of the boys are problems, even if Judy was right about Smith and the fact that the parents were enabling it, he wasn't doing anything to make thing better. Based on everything, apart from disapproval he got, he still could work on his dreams, like at least get a part-time job and fund himself, way more helpful than protesting by staying and playing games.
