When should we use a VPN? This question could have several answers, but the most common one is to access sites that have been blocked by a country's government.
However, such access also automatically leads to other things, such as preserving our identity, dealing with censorship and freedom of expression. It is also possible to access sites from other countries that have restricted their own, so its uses are somewhat varied.
Privacy seems to be the central issue in this technology, and many will be able to pronounce themselves in this respect by choosing a good VPN that transmits to those people who need it, trust and security in their hands. Which is exactly what we all deserve.
There are many options available today. In fact, in my opinion, one of the most interesting VPNs you can currently try is Proton VPN, which is very complete considering the possibilities it offers. Now a competitor has appeared!
Nym Technologies is getting so close that it is generating a lot of buzz. Yes, there has already been a showcase of what this application can achieve, and it was given as part of an event called Web3 Summit in 2019.
The company was founded in 2017 and managed to raise a staggering $100 million from firms such as Andressen Horowitz, Digital Currency Group, Polychain Capital, Tayssir Capital and 1kx.
Right now the application is in beta phase and is accessible to anyone who wants to try it. You will simply need to complete your registration and obviously download the application.
In terms of technology NymVPN has an anonymous registration feature, using what is called zero-knowledge proof, which basically deals with a cryptography method. We may have seen it named in blockchain projects like ZKSync.
In addition to anonymizing any user who is willing to use this VPN, they have included in the network an additional noise that what it will do is “confuse” systems that try, under a sort of pattern detection, to remove the anonymity in the network traffic. In this case, AI seems to be one of the concerns, not only because it has gained accuracy over time, but also because it could be automation systems.
In this context, AI is a powerful technology that has great technical capabilities, and is likely to focus its attention on metadata. To combat this, noise has been generated to protect and hide communication between users.
This is very similar to a mixed network, where users' metadata is mixed in encrypted packets. This metadata can include IP addresses, date, time and location.
According to Nym, the technology called zk-nym ensures total privacy for the user from the moment of registration, empowering the user to verify and manage their account at their convenience without the need for their identity to be exposed. In addition, the company assures that neither they will know that you are using the platform nor what activity you are doing.
Something that could cause us concern at the moment could be latency. In most VPNs, we could experience delays in loading, which basically refers to the slowness in which data packets are sent and received.
To maintain a balance between speed and anonymity, there is a “fast” mode that is about hiding the IP address while creating traffic routing through two independent servers.
There is also the anonymous mode, which offers complete top-level privacy, very similar to TOR technology. This mode is about routing traffic through 5 servers, adding noise to them and then adding onion encryption (encryption through multiple layers of encryption). This achieves such privacy that it would be too complex to track and observe activities on the network.
Nym assures that this mode is optimal when the information to be handled is sensitive or confidential and latency is not a problem to be considered. At this point, many of us would have the idea of espionage or some kind of conspiracy, but perhaps we have seen too many movies.
This VPN has very complete features, and is an option that ensures to solve all the problems that threaten the freedom of expression, privacy and security of people around the world.
