My Day-Trip To Türkiye's Venezia, Eskişehir [ENG-TUR]

I wrote that the summer-like days in Istanbul were over and that I was doing the last nature activity of 2023 in my last travel post. Even though we haven't fully entered the winter season, the forecast of the second weekend of November was rainy in Istanbul showed rain. Before winter come, I and my friend had started researching alternative routes close to Istanbul that we can visit on the weekend. One of them was Eskişehir, which we had been planning to go to for a long time but couldn't. In this part of my travel post, I will write about my day trip to Eskişehir, known as the Venezia of Turkey.

Son gezi yazımda, İstanbul’da yazdan kalma günlerin artık sona erdiğini ve 2023’ün son doğa aktivitesini yaptığımdan bahsetmiştim. Kış mevsimine tam olarak geçmesek de Kasım'ın ikinci haftasonunda İstanbul’da hava durumu yağmurlu görünüyordu. Kış gelmeden, arkadaşımla haftasonu günlük gezebileceğimiz alternatif ve İstanbul’a yakın rotalar araştırmaya başladık. Bunlardan bir tanesi, uzun zamandır gitmeyi planladığımız fakat gidemedğimiz Eskişehir’di. Gezi yazılarımın bu bölümünde sizlere, Türkiye’nin Venediği olarak bilinen ili Eskişehir’e yaptığım günübirlik geziden bahsedeceğim.

We set off on Saturday at around 7 am without having breakfast. We fueled up the car at the nearest gas station. There was approximately 300 km of a road ahead of us. Unluckily, we got stuck in traffic early in the morning near Gebze. After wasting 45 minutes in traffic, we continued on our way at without stopping. Two-hour drive, we took a half-hour break near Sakarya to have breakfast. Then, we continued on our way again. There was an hour and a half drive to be left. Fortunately, there was no traffic after Gebze and we arrived in Eskişehir after a drive of approximately 4 hours.

Cumartesi günü sabah saat 7 gibi kahvaltı yapmadan yola çıktık. En yakın akaryakıt istasyonunda arabının deposunu fulledik. Önümüzde yaklaşık 300 km’lik bir yol vardı. Gebze yakınlarında şansımıza sabah sabah trafiğe takıldık. Burda bir 45 dakika kaybettikten sonra tam gaz yola devam ettik. İki saatlik yolculuğun ardından, kahvaltı yapmak için Sakarya taraflarında yarım saat mola verdik. Sonra tekrar yola devam ettik. Bir buçuk saatlik yolumuz kalmıştı. Neyse ki Gebze’den sonra hiç trafik yoktu ve yaklaşık 4 saatlik bir yolculuğun ardından Eskişehir’e varmıştık.

We turned right to the city center and drove a little further, then we looked for a park for the car. After parking the car, we started walking down Porsuk River. We passed the tram street and reached the Venezia of Turkey through one of the side streets leading to the Porsuk River.

Şehir merkezine doğru saga dönüp biraz daha gittikten sonra arabayı park edecek bir yer aradık. Uygun bir otopark bulup arabayı park ettikten sonra Porsuk Çayı’na doğru yürümeye başladık. Tramvay caddesinden geçip Porsuk Çayı’na çıkan ara sokaklardan birinden Türkiye’nin Venedik’ine ulaştık.

Since it was noon, Porsuk River and its surroundings were calm. We thought to take a gondola ride after wandering around the city center. After taking pictures of the Porsuk River and the gondolas, we started walking towards the east through the city center. Our first impressions were that although Eskişehir is located in Inner Western Anatolia, it is no different from Istanbul or any other European city. Most of the transportation is provided by the trams, and this adds a special beauty to the city. I can say that the Metropolitan Mayor Yılmaz Büyükerşen really created the city from scratch.

Öğle saatleri olması nedeniyle Porsuk Çayı ve etrafı sakindi. Gondola şehir merkezini dolaştıktan sonra bineriz diye düşündük. Porsuk Çayı’nın ve gondolların resimlerini çektikten sonra doğu yönüne doğru şehir merkezinden yürümeye başladık. İlk izlenimlerimiz, İç Batı Anadolu’da bulunmasına karşın Eskişehir’in İstanbul’dan veya herhangi bir Avrupa şehrinden farkı olmadığıydı. Ulaşımın büyük bir kısmı Tramvaylar ile sağlanıyor ve bu durum da şehre ayrı bir güzellik katıyor. Eskişehir Büyükşehir Belediye başkanı Yılmaz Büyükerşen gerçekten şehri baştan yaratmış diyebilirim.

We arrived at the location of the Historical Odunpazarı Houses after about a 20-minute walk,. As you can see in the pictures, there are colorful houses lined up for 150-200 meters. One would want to take lots of pictures. There are also colorful houses/stores selling souvenirs related to Eskişehir up this street. We bought souvenirs and lingered here for a while.

Yaklaşık 20 dakikalık bir yürüşten sonra Tarihi Odunpazarı Evlerinin bulunduğu yere gelmiştik. Resimlerde de gördüğünüz gibi 150-200 metre boyunca dizilmiş rengarenk evler var. İnsan bol bol resim çekmek istiyor. Bu sokağın yukarısında Eskişehir ile ilgili hediyelik eşya satan renkli evler/dükkanlar devam ediyor. Burada hediyelik eşyalar alıp bir süre oyalandık.

Then, we passed through a beautiful side street and went to Odunpazarı Municipality Atlıhan Handicrafts Bazaar.

Daha sonra güzel bir ara sokaktan geçip Odunpazarı Belediyesi Atlıhan El Sanatları Çarşısı’na gittik.

There are also shops and stores here that sell souvenirs, meerschaums unique to Eskişehir, and where you can eat or drink something.

Burada da hediyelik eşya ve Eskişehir’e özel Lületaşı satan ve yemek yiyebileceğiniz, birşeyler içebileceğiniz dükkanlar mevcut.

As soon as you exit the bazaar, your eyes would catch the Ataol Behramoğlu Library deep in blue colour.

Çarşının çıkışında hemen gözünüze masmavi regiyle Ataol Behramoğlu Kitaplığı çarpıyor.

A few steps ahead, you would be greeted by the graffiti of Osman Hamdi Bey's work titled "Girl Who Fits the Vase".

Birkaç adım ilerde ise Osman Hamdi Bey’in “Vazo Yerleştiren Kız” adlı eserinin grafitisi size karşılıyor.

Along this street there are shops/stores selling souvenirs and many museums; art and culture houses. Sure, all of them are colorful buildings. We couldn't visit these places because our time was limited. It was 3 o'clock in the afternoon. We walked back to the center, towards Porsuk Stream, and looked for a place to eat. Our plan was to take the gondola after eating and return to Istanbul in the evening.

Bu sokak boyunca hediyelik eşya satan dükkanlar ile birçok müze; sanat ve kültür evleri bulunmaktadır. Tabi ki bunlar birbirinden yine renkli binalardan oluşuyor. Zamanımız kısıtlı olduğu için buralara uğrayamadık. Saat öğleden sonra 3 olmuştu. Tekrar merkeze, Porsuk Çayı’na doğru yürüyüp yemek yiyecek bir yer aradık. Planımız yemek yedikten sonra gondola binip akşama doğru İstanbul’a geri dönmekti.

After eating, we came to Porsuk River again, the point where people board gondola. However, things did not go as we had planned. There was a queue at the gondola boarding area. We wished we had taken a gondola when we arrived at noon. In the meantime, there was a crowd due to the people coming with tour buses to Eskişehir. We didn't want to wait in queue here. By the way, the gondola ride fee is 200 TL for a maximum of 4 people. We took a few photos around Porsuk River, then we sat in a cafe and rested. We set off to return to Istanbul after it got dark.

Yemek yedikten sonra tekrar Porsuk Çayı’na, gondollara binilen noktaya geldik. Fakat, evdeki hesap çarşıya uymamıştı. Gondollara biniş yerinde sıra vardı. Keşke öğlen geldiğimizde gondola binseydik diye iç geçirdik. Bir yandan da, tur otobüsleri ile Eskişehir’e gelen insanların oluşturduğu kalabalık vardı. Burdaki sırayı beklemek istemedik. Bu arada gondola biniş ücreti maksimum 4 kişi için 200 TL. Porsuk Çayı etrafında birkaç tane fotoğraf çektikten sonra bir kafede oturup dinlendik. Hava karardıktan sonra İstanbul’a dönmek üzere yola çıktık.

This was me and my friend's first time in Eskişehir. Eskişehir exceeded both of our expectations. The trams passing through the city center give you a European feeling. I can say that Eskişehir is an "underrated" city. I definitely think that there should be more promotion campaigns about Eskişehir in Türkiye’s tourism program. I recommend you visit and see Eskişehir. We will come again and this time we will ride a gondola :) All photos in this post belong to me. Thank you for reading.

Bu benim ve arkadaşımın Eskişehir’e ilk gelişiydi. Eskişehir ikimizin de beklentisinin üstünde çıktı. Şehrin merkezinden geçen tramvaylar sizde Avrupai bir his uyandırıyor. Eskişehir için “underrated” yani hakkettiği değeri almayan bir şehir diyebilirim. Kesinlikle Türkiye turizm tanıtımlarında daha fazla yer verilmeli diye düşünüyorum.
