My Aegean Tour - Part 11: Priene Ancient City, Söke, Aydın [ENG-TUR]

From the beginning of the pandemic until 2023, I had taken domestic vacations towards end of the summer season due to the pandemic and economic crisis. I don't like the vacation format that goes between hotel, sea and foods anyway. I want to explore new places as much as possible. Last year, I realized the Aegean tour that I had planned long before. I could not travel all over the Aegean, but in this travel post series, I write about the places I could visit in detail in the Aegean. The eleventh of those is Priene Ancient City, which is located in Söke district of Aydın province.

Pandeminin başlangıcından 2023 yılına kadar, pandemi ve ekonomik kriz nedeniyle yurtiçinde yaz sezonu sonlarına doğru tatile çıkıyordum. Zaten otel deniz ve yemek arasında geçip giden tatil şeklini sevmiyorum. Mümkün olduğunca yeni yerler keşfetmek istiyorum. Geçen yıl uzun zamandır yapmayı planladığım Ege turunu gerçekleştirdim. Ege’nin her yerini gezemedim ama bu gezi yazısı serisinde sizlere Ege’de detaylı gezebildiğim yerlerden bahsedeceğim. Bunlardan dokuzuncusu Aydın ilinin Söke ilçesinde bulunan Priene Antik Kenti’dir.

In fact, our travel plan would have ended in Ölüdeniz, however we planned a few more destinations to visit on our way back to Istanbul and extended our vacation plan for a few more days. The first of these destinations was Priene Ancient City. As two friends who love to visit ancient cities, it would be impossible not to see Priene Ancient City after seeing a few ancient cities on the journey between İzmir and Muğla. Having breakfast at the hotel in the morning, we set off early. Fethiye and Ölüdeniz could not meet our expectations. After a long journey of about five hours, in the afternoon, we arrived at the Priene Ancient City in the Söke district of Aydın. Just let me say this, the Ancient Cities of Miletus and Priene are very close to each other. I think we could see Priene on the same day after Miletus.

Aslında, seyahat planımız Ölüdeniz’de bitiyordu ama biz İstanbul’a dönüş yolunda uğrayabileceğimiz birkaç destinasyon daha belirleyip tatil planımızı birkaç gün daha uzattık. Bu destinasyonlardan birincisi Priene Antik Kenti’ydi. Antik kentleri gezmeyi seven iki arkadaş olarak İzmir ve Muğla arasındaki yolculukta birkaç antik kenti gördükten sonra Priene Antik Kenti’ni görmemek olmazdı. Sabah otelde kahvaltıyı yaptıktan sonra erkenden yola çıktık. Fethiye ve Ölüdeniz bizden beklenen notu alamamıştı. Yaklaşık beş saatlik uzun bir yolcuğun ardından, öğleden sonra, Aydın’ın Söke ilçesinde bulunan Priene Antik Kenti’ne varmıştık. Şunu söyleyeyim, Milet ile Priene Antik Kentleri birbirlerine çok yakın. Milet’ten sonra Priene’yi aynı gün görebilirdik diye düşünüyorum.

We parked the car near the entrance to Priene Ancient City.. We entered the ruins with our museum cards. There were a few tourists besides us. I guess there weren't many people because it was getting close to evening. During a twenty-minute walk uphill, we respectively reached Bouleuterion and Prytaneion, Ancient Greek Theatre, Bishop's Church and Temple of Athena Polias, the construction of which was supported by Alexander the Great. A large part of the ancient city could be seen from here. However, the structures of the Priene Ancient City could not survive over time, thus the ancient city looks like a pile of stones. As far as I could see, the most prominent and surviving structures of this ancient city among pine trees are Temple of Athena Polias, the Ancient Greek Theatre, the Bouleuterion and Prytaneion. We stayed in the ancient city for about half an hour and took photos.

Priene Antik Kenti’nin girişine yakın bir yere arabayı park ettik. Müze kartlarımızla ören yerine giriş yaptık. Bizim dışımızda birkaç turist vardı. Sanırım saatin akşama yaklaşması nedeniyle fazla kişi yoktu. Yokuş yukarı yirmi dakikalık bir yürüyüş sürecinde sırasıyla Bouleuterion ve Prytaneion, Antik Yunan Tiyatrosu, Bishop Kilisesi ve yapımına Büyük İskender’in de destek verdiği Athena Polias Tapınağı’na ulaşmıştık. Buradan antik kentin büyük bir bölümü görünebiliyordu. Fakat, Priene Antik Kenti’nin yapıları zamanla ayakta kalamamış, bu yüzden de antik kent biraz taş yığını gibi görülüyor. Gördüğüm kadarıyla çam ağaçları arasında kalan bu antik kentin en belirgin ve ayakta kalan yapıları Athena Polias Tapınağı, Antik Yunan Tiyatrosu ile Bouleuterion ve Prytaneion’dur. Yaklaşık yarım saat antik kentte kalıp fotoğraflar çektik.

As stated in my previous posts, I would love to visit such ancient cities and buildings. All of them have their own mystical atmosphere. Touching their works takes me thousand of years back. While I wander around an ancient city, I think of the people who lived in that period and built those ancient structures. How did they live? What were they happy with in life? What problems did they have?

Önceki yazılarımda da belirtiğim üzere ben böyle antik şehir ve yapıları gezmeyi çok seviyorum. Hepsinin ayrı bir mistik havası var. Yaptıkları eserlere dokunmak beni binlerce yıl geriye götürüyor. Bir antik şehri gezerken o dönemde yaşayan ve bu antik yapıları yapan insanları düşünürüm. Nasıl yaşıyorlardı? Hayatta neyle mutlu oluyorlardı? Ne gibi dertleri vardı?
