Memories of a Geisha (Book Review) ESP/ENG
Very good morning, afternoon or evening (depending on the time you are reading my post) I hope you are well, today I came back here because I want to leave you my opinion about a book I read recently, it is ‘Memoirs of a Geisha’ by Arthur Golden, a book that, according to what I was investigating, caused a bit of controversy at the time of its publication because many women belonging to the geisha guild accused the author of being sensationalist and of adding too many distorted ideas to his book, even one of them decided to write her own book to refute it, even so I decided to take it for what it is, a fiction novel that in a way gives us a vision of what was the hard life of women in Japan in the first half of the twentieth century.
Muy buenos días, tardes o noches (dependiendo de la hora en la que estén leyendo mi publicación) espero que se encuentren bien, hoy regresé por aquí porque quiero dejarles mi opinión acerca de un libro que leí recientemente, se trata de "Memorias de una Geisha" de Arthur Golden, un libro que, según lo que estuve investigando, causó un poco de controversia al momento de su publicación ya que muchas mujeres pertenecientes al gremio de las geishas acusaban al autor de sensacionalista y de añadir demasiadas ideas tergiversadas a su libro, incluso, una de ellas decidió escribir su propio libro para desmentirlo, aún así yo decidí tomarlo como lo que es, una novela de ficción que de cierta manera nos da una visión de lo que fue la dura vida de las mujeres en el Japón de la primera mitad del siglo XX.
Resumen
The story begins in a distant fishing village in Japan, where a pair of girls (Chiyo and her sister Satsu Sakamoto) are sold to a person who from that moment on will decide their destiny, when they arrive in the big city both were separated, the older of them (Satsu) was taken to a brothel, while the younger (Chiyo) was transferred to an Okya (Geisha's house) where she will have to start as a maid. The ‘star’, so to speak, of the Oya is a beautiful but haughty and arrogant young woman called Hatsumomo, who begins to make derogatory remarks about the poor new girl. Chiyo went through many difficulties in that place because of the owner of the Geisha house and because of Hatsumomo, until she finally meets a man who changes her life radically, Mr. Iwamura, from that moment on little Chiyo becomes obsessed with this man who in one of her moments of sadness was kind and gentle with her, but at the same time the luck of the little girl begins to change, the most famous Geisha of the city, Mameha San, becomes interested in her education, She makes her her protégée and begins to instruct her in her profession, with the aim of turning her into one of the most prestigious geisha in the city, so that after a long and difficult process of learning about performing arts, culture, writing and dance, in a ceremony, the little Chiyo stops calling herself as such, adopting the name Sayuri, but at the same time she will discover that she still has a long way to go and that the life of the Maicos and Geisha is not at all easy.
La historia comienza en una lejana aldea pesquera de Japón, donde un par de niñas (Chiyo y su hermana Satsu Sakamoto) son vendidas a una persona que a partir de ese momento decidirá su destino, al llegar a la gran ciudad ambas fueron separadas, la mayor de ellas (Satsu) fue llevada a un burdel, mientras que la menor (Chiyo) fue trasladada a una Okya (casa de Geishas) donde deberá iniciar como criada. La "estrella" por llamarla de alguna manera, de la Oya es una hermosa pero altiva y arrogante joven llamada Hatsumomo, la cual comienza a hacer comentarios despectivos sobre la pobre niña recién llegada. Chiyo pasó por muchas dificultades en ese lugar por causa de la dueña de la casa de Geishas y por Hatsumomo, hasta que finalmente conoce a un hombre que cambia su vida radicalmente, el señor Iwamura, a partir de ese momento la pequeña Chiyo se obsesiona con este hombre que en uno de sus momentos de tristeza fue amable y gentil con ella, pero al mismo tiempo la suerte de la pequeña comienza a cambiar, la Geisha más famosa de la ciudad, Mameha San, se interesa por su educación, la convierte en su protegida y comienza a instruirla en su oficio, con el fin de convertirla en una de las geishas más prestigiosas de la ciudad, de modo que luego de un largo y difícil proceso de aprendizaje sobre arte escénico, cultura, escritura y danza, en una ceremonia, la pequeña Chiyo dejó de llamarse como tal, adoptando el nombre Sayuri, pero al mismo tiempo descubrirá que aún le queda mucho camino por recorrer y que la vida de las Maicos y Geishas no es para nada fácil.
My Opinion
I must be totally honest with you, the author's narrative is so good that I thought it was the autobiography of an authentic Geisha, it is very detailed and accurately describes the feelings and thoughts of a woman of the time and especially of the oriental culture, the story is narrated in first person and even though I don't usually like this type of narration very much, the plot is so immersive that it tears your soul to read about the kidnapping of both sisters and all the hardships they have to go through, it is impossible not to put yourself in the shoes of the protagonist, even if you are a man (as in my case) especially when you have daughters and want to protect them always.
Debo ser totalmente honesto con ustedes, la narrativa del autor es tan buena que yo creí que se trataba de la autobiografía de una Geisha autentica, es muy detallista y describe con precisión los sentimientos y pensamientos de una mujer de la época y sobre todo de la cultura oriental, la historia está narrada en primera persona y a pesar de que no suele gustarme mucho este tipo de narración, la trama es tan inmersiva que te desgarra el alma leer sobre el secuestro de ambas hermanas y todas las dificultades por las que tienen que pasar, es imposible no ponerse en la piel de la protagonista, aún y cuando seas un hombre (como en mi caso) sobre todo cuando tienes hijas y deseas protegerlas siempre.
On the other hand, while I think the author may have exaggerated certain aspects of Geisha culture (especially the controversial mizuage), we also have to take into account that this is a book based in the first half of the 20th century, and that was a very difficult time for women, it's all very different now, even for today's Geisha. The book also sheds light on the mystery behind those white faces, so you end up understanding that there are many hours of hard work, money and discipline that go into becoming artists, because after all that is what Geisha are, true artists of culture and entertainment.
Por otra parte, si bien creo que el autor posiblemente exageró en cuanto a ciertos aspectos de la cultura entorno a las Geishas, (sobre todo en ese asunto del polémico mizuage) también debemos tomar en cuenta que es un libro basado en la primera mitad del siglo XX, y esa era una época muy difícil para las mujeres, todo es muy distinto ahora, incluso para las Geishas actuales. El libro también arroja luz sobre el misterio tras esas caras blancas, de modo que terminas comprendiendo que hay muchas horas de trabajo duro invertido, dinero y disciplina para lograr convertirse en artistas, porque al fin y al cabo eso es lo que son las Geishas, verdaderas artistas de la cultura y el entretenimiento.
Other things I loved about this book are the main character's dialogues, those sentences are so full of depth and that can only come from someone who has lived too many emotions and experiences throughout her life.
Otras de las cosas que me encantó de este libro son los diálogos de la protagonista, son esas frases tan llenas de profundidad y que solo pueden provenir de alguien que ha vivido demasiadas emociones y experiencias a lo largo de su vida.

Había escuchado de este libro antes precisamente por lo controversial que fue. Sin embargo, por lo que describes parece interesante porque plantea una perspectiva cruda, apresar de que puede tener ciertas exageraciones porque al fin y al cabo sigue siendo ficción.

Sin lugar a dudas fue un muy buen libro, yo lo disfruté, claro, tomando con pinzas la información, como bien dices, pero es verdad que la narrativa del autor es atrapante. Excelente reseña.
