What if you woke up one day and found yourself living in someone else's body? Suppose one day he slept in his own bed and the next day he woke up in a strange unknown room, in the body of a stranger. How will it be?Kimi No Na Wa or Your Name in English is a strangely beautiful Japanese anime film based on such a story. It is the highest-grossing and highest-grossing anime movie in history so far. With a 98% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes and being on IMDB's top 100 movie list, it goes without saying that it is a much higher than average movie.
The story begins with the exchange of Taki and Mitsuha. Suddenly one day, Taki wakes up and realizes that he has entered the body of a girl from an unknown village far away from his home in Tokyo. Similarly, Mitsuha discovers her own being inside Taki's body in the city of Tokyo. It's like switching two people's brains.
Mitsuha, who lives in the village, dreams of visiting the capital Tokyo, on the other hand, Taki himself wants to escape from the hustle and bustle of school and work. This swap brings that opportunity in front of them a little strangely. But they do not know each other, nor do they know anything about each other's lifestyle or surroundings. At first both of them have a lot of trouble living each other's lives like this, but eventually they get used to it. For a day or two this would happen between them, this exchange. So when one passed into another's body, they would keep notes of the day's activities so that it would be easier to understand the other's activities the next time they were in their respective bodies. (It will be more clear if you watch the movie.)
So their life was going quite well. But one day suddenly everything stopped. Days and weeks pass, Taki waits for such an exchange with Mitsuha again, but it never happens. The phone number Mitsuha saves in his phone appears unreachable. Unable to accept his separation from Mitsuha, Taki sets out to find him. Taki doesn't even remember the name of Mitsuha's village, his whole attempt to find it depends on a few sketches of the village drawn from memory. Whether or not he finds Mitsuha at all, it would be better to watch the movie.
You may read this and think "This boy has said everything, will I see him in the movie?" But I can assure you, if you are watching this movie for the first time, then this movie will not come close to what you expect. A shocker so big you'll feel like you're having a stroke, your heartbeat will skip at the pace of the story.
The director of the movie Makoto Shinkai has given the movie so much awesomeness that it won't let you get bored for a second; not even a single second. One of the best animated visualizations I've ever seen here. I don't think I've seen such a clean anime before. The combination of ambience and songs is more awesome. Even Hollywood doesn't see that in animation, especially background music.
It's getting massive response worldwide, has gone to the top list of IMDB-Rotten Tomatoes, almost from out of nowhere. And after you watch it, you will understand with a breath-taking feeling why it deserves to be in that position.
Considering the animation as a separate section, I would call it a pure masterpiece and one of the most unique movies I've ever seen. Even if you don't have a habit of watching Japanese anime, watch it. If you like teenage drama, romance, mystery, thriller-etc, watch this. Don't like them? Check it out too. In short, watch the movie at least once. Otherwise something much better "looks like" will be left out.
