The Accountability Check: Medical Institution Version
Every Medical Institution is expected to play a very vital Role in shaping the Later generation of Healthcare Professionals because obviously the present ones are running out of time. So As life bearers , future physicians, every Medical student must be held to high standards of accountability, sharpening and enhancing their Skills to provide Holistic and quality care as well as uphold the integrity of the Medical Profession. Hence the Importance of accountability should be overemphasized in every Medical Institution.
Before joining the Nursing Profession, I was made to know that I would be dealing with a life, 2 or more, when I become a midwife and this Life extends to the relatives of my Patients because any mishap could get them to a state of devastation as well. Hence whatever I have to do should be done with all manner of carefulness. Carefulness Not really to Avoid death but most especially to avoid Medical Errors.
Medical Errors like wrong Vital signs check, medication errors, cross Contamination and infection of patients and Lots More. Medical Errors have devastating consequences which could haunt you as a medical professional too, hence the need for total accountability of every action you take in the healthcare settings.
Asides Haunting you, accountability goes a long way to ensure you understand the gravity of your actions, fosters a culture of Responsibility, cautiousness while working, respect from others around when you have a clean and transparent record and it also enhances EMPATHY and offers one a room for self reflection which promotes growth and excellence.
Accountability could start from the normal classroom setting, where lectures are being taken and your academic prowess is being tested just to meet the academic standards and requirements. And then to Demonstrating competence in the Clinical field and as the year goes by, upholding medical ethics and standards.
Personal Accountability: Taking responsibility for one's actions and decisions. A typical Example of Mine is when I broke my Ward's Thermometer, I was scolded immediately by my Matron and I had to replace it with Immediate Effect.
With accountability not only in the medical field , but other ramifications of life, there are certain outcomes expected.
Clear Expectations: Establish explicit standards and policies.
Regular Feedback: Provide constructive feedback and evaluations.
Mentorship: Pair students with experienced physicians and mentors.
Self-Assessment: Encourage students to reflect on their performance.
Peer Review: Foster open communication and constructive criticism.
