In our world today and throughout history, infectious diseases have been a major threat to human health, so many lives have been lost as a result of the spread of these infectious diseases. Initially I had thought that infectious diseases are only being transmitted from persons to persons but I learnt and was taught that infectious diseases are communicable diseases that are caused by diseases causing agents such as bacteria, viruses, fungi and parasites etc and are capable of being spread directly from persons to persons or indirectly from animals to man, it could also be spread via the air or through contaminated surfaces etc.

let's take an instance, the recent COVID-19 diseases, the outbreak of this pandemic lead to a high mortality rate. Before the vaccine came in everyone had just one alternative which was good hygiene practices and of a truth it really helped.

These infectious diseases can widely affect a whole population because of how it is being spread and one of the strategic ways to reduce this spread is by maintaining a healthy environment, practicing good hygiene begining from personal cleanliness to environmental sanitation.

Good hygiene is a simple yet a very effective way to help curb the spread of illnesses, and it is very important for individuals and communities to adopt and maintain good hygiene practices.

Just like the popular saying "your health is your wealth" we need to carry out several hygiene practices to prevent the spread of these infectious diseases. These practices include:

1. REGULAR HAND WASHING : Hand hygiene is very important because we use our hands virtually for everything, Washing hands regularly with soap and water especially after using the bathroom, before eating, and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing is very essential as we could transmit these infectious diseases just through our hands. when Corona virus was really effective, we had wash basins and sinks everywhere, at school, in church, hospitals, shopping malls etc and hand hygiene is a very effective tool to prevent the spread of these infectious diseases.

When soap and water are not available, one could make use of alcohol-based hand sanitizers (containing at least 60% alcohol). They are effective against many pathogens and certain viruses like norovirus.

2. PERSONAL HYGIENE: Personal hygiene is not only about hand washing but the way you keep yourself and your personal belongings clean always, this could be done by having your bath regularly, wearing clean clothes, washing your dirty clothes, brushing your teeth atleast twice a day and most importantly keeping short and clean nails.

3. Environmental Sanitation: This has to do with keeping your environment clean by cleaning, washing, proper waste disposal, disposing our sewage and getting rid of stagnant water, stagnant water is a habitat for some vectors and pathogens, clearing the bushes in our environment to prevent pest and harmful animals.

4. PUBLIC HEALTH HYGIENE PRACTICES: Our hygiene should not only be personal it should also be extended to our neighboring places, health education campaigns should be carried out to educate other people on how and why they have to maintain good hygiene.

THE IMPACT OF GOOD HYGIENE ON PUBLIC HEALTH

1.Good hygiene practices reduces the rate of people getting sick regularly.

2.Good hygiene improves the overall well being of a person thereby leading to a greater productivity of people in a nation.

3.Good hygiene practices helps to prevent the spread of infectious diseases like COVID19.

4.Good hygiene can reduce the health costs by reducing the number of illnesses.

to crown it all, it is beneficial to everyone to practice good hygiene, it serves as an effective means to prevent the spread of these infectious diseases. let all hands be on deck by working together, we can promote good hygiene practices and reduce the burden of infectious diseases.

I also want to use this medium to invite my friends to take part in this initiative
