The Deception - Creative NonFiction [ENG - ESP]
I was never a fan of jokes, but I always liked to apply them to others. With the few friends I managed to make in college it was always the same: little jocular comments about such situations, hilarious relationships with different people; everything always bordered on the innocent and wholesome, although my friends liked to boast within that circle, there was a time when we crossed that limit just to taste the sweetest honey of fun.
Rosy was the most naive girl in our group and the most uninformed about trending topics that appeared on social media. She had a very particular laugh which we always listened to. It was very easy to make her laugh, especially using terms that she didn't know, but that she thought were funny.
Once, Marina, David, and I made her walk around the university giving her false clues about our location. Rosy despaired, but at the same time laughed, and quickly this game we had with her lost her interest when she stopped trusting us.
We tried to cheer her up with jokes that were out of our daily routine, and we tried to make her feel at ease with our particular way of having fun. However, David was the naughtiest of us. His personality always stood out for being too hilarious and mocking. His comments were riddled with jokes that he would spout off whenever he brought up any topic.
"I think Professor Gutierrez wants to give me a zero in the subject. If I were a skinny, pretty girl he'd give me a good grade," David joked, referring to that supposed peculiarity of a teacher in our career.
"Well, it's not Professor Gutierrez's fault that you're not a good student," Rosy replied. Marina and I nodded laughing at David.
"Oh, wow! Looks like someone has a crush on the professor," David said mockingly.
"Well, I don't deny that he is very attractive, but no, I don't have a crush on him," Rosy stated as she laughed with a slight laugh.
We all looked at each other smiling slightly. We were introduced to the idea that Rosy liked Professor Gutierrez; we even made fleeting jokes about our friend's fascination with him for a while. We would point out things like how that was the only class she was on time, or that she always sat in the front to be closer to the professor. She was also the one who interacted the most and always had at least an erratic opinion on the subject at hand.
This to David was like an Eden ready to Arrochar, and he came up with something that at the time we didn't consider nefarious.
"You know what would be funny?" David would ask us that day in the afternoon, lying on the university grass waiting for class. "We'd write a letter to Rosy pretending it was from Professor Gutierrez."
Marina and I gasped.
"That would be hilarious," I said as I chuckled.
"Yes, imagine that. She's all excited," Marina commented before bursting out laughing.
"We should do it, then tell him it was a joke," David specified.
"Yeah, let's do it!" I said and we got down to business.
We typed up the letter and were as romantic as we could be. We highlighted a few details that Rosy was sure to love and were cautious about slipping the letter into her bag as we were inside Professor Gutierrez's classroom.
As we left the classroom, we headed to the cafeteria to chat and drink coffee, and at one point in our chat, Rosy checked her bag and found that letter. We watched her out of the corner of our eyes as she read it, and held back our laughter until she got up and stormed out of the cafeteria. We all burst out laughing waiting for her to tell us what happened, and then, after a few minutes, she returned; with a smile so resplendent it seemed adorned by glints of sunshine.
"I think I'm going to study more sociology," she blurted out suddenly and we pretended to be oblivious.
"Any particular reason?" David asked.
"No, I just feel like I should put more effort into the subject," she asserted before taking her last sip of coffee, then she waved goodbye to us with a twinkle in her eye and walked out of the cafeteria door smiling and almost strutting.
"My God, did he believe that?" I expressed almost in surprise.
"Apparently yes, we should tell him it's a joke before he gets more delusional," Marina stressed.
"No, let's continue with this game, if we see that things go further we will tell him the whole truth," replied David laughing at what had just happened.
Marina and I watched each other, at that moment we detected that something was not right, but we knew that we would not hurt Rosy by making her do something crazy, so we played along with David.
The next day, the three of us were at the university square waiting for Rosy, but she didn't show up. Marina wrote her a message which Rosy replied that she would be a little late for class that morning. We were all a bit puzzled, but we took it in stride.
Rosy didn't make it in time, as we left the classroom, we found her sitting on the floor of one of the hallways crestfallen.
"What happened to you?" Marina asked her.
"I just went through a horrible embarrassment..." she stated with a flushed face as she showed us the letter. "I found this in my bag and I thought Professor Gutierrez had written it to me, but when I confronted him I realized he hadn't. Who the fuck would do this to me?"
At that moment, David burst out laughing. "Oh, Rosy, you shouldn't believe everything that comes out of your purse, it was us, we wrote that letter!"
Rosy stood up in surprise and glared at us.
"Guys, that wasn't funny, I was embarrassed because of you!" She exclaimed angrily and then stormed off.
"Oh no, we should apologize," I said lashed with grief.
"Yes, I'd better go catch up with her," Marina replied and hurriedly went to find Rosy.
David let out a rueful sigh, he thought that joke would be very funny, but now he felt very silly. After a couple of hours, Marina phoned us to come to the plaza. There she was with Rosy. She was still looking at us with hatred. We sincerely apologized and assured her that it would not happen again. Fortunately, we reconciled with our friend, however, she still had fits of embarrassment every time she saw Professor Gutierrez and no longer sat in the front seats in her classes.
THE END

It was a joke very heavy, I can imagine the embarrassment your friend went through when she spoke to the teacher. Luckily, your friend forgave them and they remained friends.
Thanks for sharing your experience.
An excellent day.
Yes, the best part was that she was able to forgive us and remain friends. After that, we never made jokes like that again.
Thanks for stopping by and reading.
I have to admit, I'm a bit surprised that Rosy didn't see it coming. I felt sorry for her. I'm glad you guys were able to apologize and make up with her in the end. It's always important to be mindful of others' feelings, even when we're just trying to have a good laugh.
By the way, I'm curious, did you guys ever tell Professor Gutierrez about the prank to relief Rosy of some of the embarrassment she faced?
She was very naïve, but she also had a good heart. We were relieved when she forgave us for that immature joke.
The teacher found out, but not from us. Once, we talked about it in front of another classmate who we thought was our friend, and then she told him. By then we were no longer seeing classes with Professor Gutierrez.
Thanks for stopping by and reading me.
That was really expensive and things could have gotten really messy for Rosy if the lecturer decided to take things up with her.
I am glad there was no consequences other than the embarrassment she faced and it's awesome that you guys remained as friends after.
Fortunately she was understanding, and we apologized so deeply vowing to her that we would never do that again, and we did.
Thanks for stopping by and reading me.
I can't believe how far the prank went. I'm glad you all eventually made amends, but it's a great reminder to be mindful of others' feelings. Thanks for sharing this relatable and entertaining story!
We certainly learned a great lesson that day.
