Recollecting Agbani Darego's Triumph At The Global Beauty Pageantry Stage
Agbani Darego, Winner, Miss World 2001
Beauty pageants are events that showcase the attractive physical appearances and mental capacity of contestants who participate in them. During the progression of these events, contestants, who are mostly women, are assessed for the aforementioned qualities alongside several others by the organisers, with the entire process made into an entertaining presentation for audiences, who may either be local or global. These pageants, which are rigorous, require contestants to meet certain criteria and conduct themselves excellently during the event.
Miss Poland, reigning beauty queen of Miss World
One of the biggest international beauty pageants in the world is "Miss World." It is the oldest running event in this category, having been ongoing for more than seven decades. It originated from the United Kingdom of Britain and was initially planned to be part of an exhibition meant to promote the achievements of the nation before the organisers of the pageant decided to make it an independent annual event. It has remained so ever since and continues to grow in popularity to this day.
Over twenty years ago, this popular and reputed beauty pageant, through its winner, made many Africans, particularly Nigerians, proud. Although this pageant took place a long time ago, memories of the event and the excitement in the atmosphere in my neighbourhood at the time are still vivid in my mind. The interest and enthusiasm shown by Nigerians while watching this particular event were remarkable and similar to the passion they have for football, the most popular sport in the country.

The Miss World beauty pageant, which took place in Sun City, South Africa, had more than 90 contestants participating in it. Nigeria's representative at the event, Agbani Darego, who earlier had an impressive outing at another renowned beauty pageant, Miss Universe, gained massive support from Nigerians, as her unprecedented performance during the latter event caught their attention and made them realise she had an opportunity to win the former.

This conviction was strong and visibly demonstrated by Nigerians on the day the pageant took place. I recall how intense and keen residents in my neighbourhood were when the event was being broadcasted. Despite the power outage at the time of the pageant's broadcast, many residents devised ways to ensure they watched it, with many going to barbershops, saloons, and video rental shops that were running on alternative sources of power such as fuel-powered generators. Fortunately, the owners of these businesses were also interested in the pageant and made their shops accessible to everyone interested in watching it.

I was running some errands for my mum during the airing of the pageant and could hear the conversation of other residents while passing by. Their reaction to the elimination of contestants during the show was sensational and tempting, causing me to contemplate suspending the errands I was running for my mum at the time. This situation got the best of me as I eventually indulged myself and joined others to watch the event at a nearby video rental shop after learning that the Nigerian contestant, Agbani Darego, had made it to the top ten, the final round of the pageant.
The stage of Miss World 2016 beauty pageant
Despite feeling worried about my decision to watch the final round of the Miss World beauty pageant and the punishment I might receive from my mum for running late on my errands, I placated myself with the thought that it was a special moment for Nigeria in the history of international beauty pageantry and that our contestant had a great shot at the title! This made me feel more relaxed and eager to know which of the contestants would emerge as the winner. However, in my state of curiosity, I strongly wished that Agbani Darego would be announced as the new "Miss World."
The atmosphere at the place where I was watching the event was tense and filled with anxiety. Many viewers, although anxious, were optimistic that our representative, Agbani Darego, had a good chance of emerging victorious. The progression of the event from that moment onwards seemed slow as the suspense also appeared unending. The suspense reached its climax after the result of the top final contestants was announced. The first and second runners-up were called up on stage without Agbani Darego being among them, thus making us feel more anxious.

The moment to find out who would emerge as the winner of the coveted Miss World beauty pageant was finally here, and we could no longer bear the suspense. As soon as Miss Nigeria was announced as the winner of the pageant, the video rental shop where I was watching the event erupted in jubilation, along with its surroundings. Agbani Darego, the Nigerian contestant, had emerged as the winner of the pageant. It was a proud moment for Nigerians, as well as Africans, as it was the first time an indigenous African woman would win the pageant.

Agbani Darego's triumph at the Miss World beauty pageant is one of the biggest achievements in Nigeria's fashion industry and a moment that made Nigerians and Africans in general proud. It was a feat that inspired other models to realise that their lofty goals are attainable and that big dreams can turn into reality.
