In dark places: the danger within!
She wore a pair of glasses and had her hair dyed pink, she had a round and almost Asian face with a faint eyebrow and beautiful grey eyes, the workers at the café all stopped their works as if they were dazzled by her beauty but their facial expressions strangely gave a different meaning to their actions, she was a regular visitor to the café, yes, but something felt off and Jake could notice it.
“Don’t even think about it,” Jake said in disapproval of his friend’s feelings towards the amazingly beautiful young woman. Kelvin paid no attention to his friends’ words as at that moment he went deaf, the only thing that mattered was the lady. Daniel watched as she made herself comfortable not two tables away from where they sat, only then was he aware of what his friend had said. “Huh, what do you mean” Daniel said looking confused, a while ago Jake was the one so eager to meet her, the woman he so longed to talk to.
“She will only drag you through dirt, filth and mud”, Jake said as he stood up from his seat. Jake was running late for his class but desperately wanted to meet the woman that stole his friend’s heart, he looked disappointed as he dropped some money on the table, remember, “Don’t try it” he repeated himself as he walked off towards the exit door. Daniel was left confused as he had no idea what he was to do, listen to his heart or his friend. It was a difficult choice for him to make as he always longed to do whatever made his friend happy and also what made him happy personally. He could remember Jake’s words to him in the past “we don’t live so long, make a choice have a lady and make a family as fast as you can,” Jake would tell him this always, but now it was up to him to decide what he really wanted.
“At least five civilians and three special forces member officials were killed at the Atlantic building last night, another case of vampire attack,” a reporter talked from the television at the corner of the café. “This is the tenth time this week a mass number of death has been recorded in eastern Lagos alone, we currently put our hopes and trust in the special forces to curb these deaths”.
Her words seemed to remind everyone in the café the type of society they lived in, “Those animals, those beasts they do not deserve to not deserve to live, the should all die terrible deaths” a frustrated man at the café yelled out while banging his table with fist. The vampires simply put on human clothing and blended so well in the society because of their resemblance to humans, their unruly appetite gives them away as their only mode of survival is to feed on human’s flesh.
Daniel yet again found himself staring at the lady he longed for who seemed to have finally noticed his gaze. In fear he lifted the novel he held to cover his face, a timid yet useful act, he was confused as to what to do next since she had seen him, he finally decided to make a move.
A little while later Daniel was walking side by side with her, heading towards a restaurant not too far from the café. They talked and jested about the various novels they both have read. Daniel found her smile very amusing as he would stare at her as she went on about her favourite things. Daniel couldn’t believe it would be so easy to get a girl.
“All I did was walked up to her, requested to sit and then complemented her looks and talked about novels”, he said to himself as they walked towards a restaurant. They both ordered a bowl of Japanese style noodles and went on with their conversation. She earlier disclosed her name to be Annie who Daniel found interesting because it sounded like a character in a show he loved very much.
They talked about a novel in particular, a story of a young man that fell in love with a vampire, he loved her so much that he failed to notice a flaw in her, unaware of what she was until the final moments of his own life.
They seemed to have taken so much interest in the plot twist of the as they kept on talking about the various parts they loved about the novel. It was a surprisingly long chat.
It was time to go home as the once gentle weather turned dark grey signifying an incoming storm. They walked together back to her house which was quite close to the restaurant. Daniel became happy by this as it meant he could easily get to see her.
They came to a halt in front of a long alley way, “uhm... is this your home?”. Daniel asked while pointing to a building beside them. “No, at the end of the alley”, she replied with a smile. A lady passed beside them making eye contact with Daniel, it was Sasha from the café, but she was almost unrecognizable, perhaps it was due to the dark straight face she gave him. Daniel paid no attention to her as he walked along with Annie down the alley.
They approached a building under construction both of them walking gracefully side by side until it all went wrong.
Annie pushed Daniel violently to the wall, touching his cheeks with her left hand as she drew her face closer his. Her nose touching his and lips briefly touching his lips. A feeling he had never experienced, a feeling he had longed for all his life.
He began to sweat as felt his blood boil. A sudden sharp needle like pain distracted him as he looked down to see Annie’s right hand pierce through his stomach. He froze in fear, and confusion as he tried desperately to make sense of what was happening. He couldn’t move.
He was pinned so tightly to the wall, this stomach stated to burn in pain as he finally summoned enough courage and strength to scream for help, but no one was going to help him, no one could hear him. The building had longed been abandoned.
He screamed out in pain as he squashed something inside him. She was laughing, licking his face and growling into his ears, he could see her glowing red eyes and pure white fangs, she wasn’t the same lovely, beautiful girl he thought he knew, she was something else, a monster, a man eater, blood drinker. She was a vampire.
