Listening to the advice of elders and experts yields fruit. Picking up gems of advice and wisdom should be common sense, but many today discount true wisdom from bling and what looks like great advice can be trash. Don't miss diamonds in the rough.

As a child, like many of my friends, I discounted the advice if my parents. I thought I had things figured out, and relied upon a simplified model of the real world I made up in my mind based on my limited understanding. I lacked experience, not intelligence, and should have heeded the advice of my elders. I would be much better prepared for challenges in my day to day life had I listened.

Wisdom comes from observing patterns and surmising root causes. As we age, we see that there is nothing new under the Sun, and we observe the ways people perform. We create with our hands and use our minds to build, and we see what works and what does not. Elders drop gems of wisdom and are a great resource for everything from building structures to selling our ideas. How can we so freely discount this resource as a society then?

Why do we discount our elder's wisdom? Marketing and society push youth and virility over true substance. We are bombarded with crafted marketing designed to sell to the masses. Wisdom is a secondary consideration.

We need to integrate the wisdom and presence of elders with wisdom and knowledge by integrating them into our communities. Take time and listen to the wisdom of your elders. It's great to pick up gems of wisdom and spread good will doing so.
