World University Games (1983) Silver

Back with another Canadian commemorative silver coin!

In case you wonder, it's not like I have a special preference for Canadian coins. Dunno why, but they are the only ones I can find these days with a price close to spot. Maybe their low purity (0.500) makes them unattractive to most collectors? Who knows.

I don't mind them though. Most are really beautiful and often feature interesting historic events. Yeah, they have that annoying mirror finish that makes taking a decent photo a bitch but I can survive with that 🫠

Ok, let's see what we have today!

As the engravings and the game logo suggest (UNIVERSIADE - EDMONTON CANADA 1983 DOLLAR) this is a 1 dollar piece minted for the 1983 University Games that took place in Edmonton. This is a sport events I was not familiar with so I had to do some googling. Today it isknown as the FISU World University Games. I'll leave some links at the end of the post if you'd like to learn more

The FISU World University Games, formerly the Universiade, is an international multi-sport event, organized for university athletes by the International University Sports Federation (FISU). The former name is a portmanteau of the words "University" and "Olympiad".

As expected, we have a Queen Eli portrait on the other side

And a basic edge:

A chunky piece, with a weight of 23.3276 g. As aforementioned, the purity stands at 0.500.

All in all, a meh piece for a meh event nobody probably gives a fuck. I paid close to spot though, which is rare these days so I won't complain 😎

Stay tuned for more silver soon! I have somethibg really interesting and unique coming up next!

Pretty cool silver coins and those at the edge of sports and history, surely have more meaning and value as they celebrate great competitions.

I believe that the university games is where the final venue for the Canadian Olympic committee to pick the best amateur athletes to participate in the the Olympic games.
I'm not much into sports but crazy about silver, even at 0.500.

I take it, you live in Canada... You should see the Mirror Finishes on our Common U.S. Quarter Dollars... They sure give me the feeling, the U.S. Mint wants us to "Collect" them... I wonder why...lol...

why would they mint a commemorative coin and not make it from 900 silver for example. I get why they used less silver in circulation coins but for special coins it seems kind of cheap

It might be because they are plentiful. Canada is known for commemorative coins, they make them for so many reasons it crazy. But it’s still silver and adds weight to your stack.

I'm enjoying the Canadian coins, the artwork style of the '83 coin reminds me of the Canadian '80s.

Nice coin. I think people do care a little bit about it but it's probably more for the athletes than anyone else. For everyone watching, it's just another event.
